Job Description

The Microbiologist (Microbiological Analyst) is responsible for conducting microbiological testing, analysis, and reporting to ensure product safety, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves hands-on laboratory work, data interpretation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams in quality assurance, R&D, and production.Under the general supervision of the QA supervisor, the job holder, checks properly the functioning of laboratory equipment’s, conducts planned and unplanned microbiological analyses of raw materials, intermediate and finished products, equipment, utensils, hand swabs of employees and any other surfaces deemed necessary. He/she arranges samples of finished product for testing. Applies relevant chemical reagents, operates laboratory equipment’s rec

d laboratory results and submits to the relevant personnel on time and in full. Overall the Microbiologist is responsible for ensuring food safety by testing raw materials, monitoring production environments, and analyzing finished products for harmful microorganisms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological testing on raw materials, finished products, and environmental samples.

  • Prepare, culture, and identify microorganisms using aseptic techniques.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment (autoclaves, incubators, microscopes…)

  • Conduct method development, validation, and troubleshooting of microbiological assays.

  • Document and interpret test results with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ensure compliance with GLP, GMP, ISO 22000 and relevant regulatory guidelines.

  • Support investigations of contamination incidents and recommend corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with QA and production teams to maintain product safety and quality standards.

Maintain laboratory safety protocols and proper waste disposal procedures

Job Requirements

  1. Required Skills & Competencies

    Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of microbiological techniques (plating, dilution, enumeration, identification).

  • Proficiency with laboratory instruments and sterile handling procedures.

  • Experience with molecular methods (PCR, ELISA, sequencing) is an added advantage.

Analytical Skills

  • Ability to interpret microbial growth patterns and contamination data.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving in unexpected lab results.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.

Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge

  • Familiarity with GMP, GLP, ISO 22000 standards.

  • Understanding of EFDA, or local health authority requirements.

Soft Skills

  • Clear communication for reporting findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Team collaboration across R&D, QA, and production.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and regulatory changes.

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Applied Biology, Biotechnology, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • At least 3 years of experience preferably in a manufacturing industry (pharmaceutical or food sector).

  • Knowledge of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is a plus.

  • Laboratory-based role with routine handling of biological samples.
