Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Contract Management 

• Draft, review, and negotiate construction contracts (clients, subcontractors, suppliers

• Ensure contracts comply with local construction laws and regulations

• Advise management on contract risks, liabilities, and obligations

• Monitor contract performance and handle variations, claims, and amendments

2. Legal Compliance & Regulatory Affairs 

• Ensure compliance with construction laws, labor laws, safety regulations, and environmental laws

• Monitor changes in laws affecting construction projects

• Advise management on legal requirements for permits, licenses, and approvals

• Ensure company policies align with legal standards

3. Dispute Resolution & Litigation 

• Handle disputes related to contracts, delays, payments, defects, or termination

• Manage claims, counterclaims, and arbitration cases

• Liaise with external lawyers, courts, and arbitration bodies

• Prepare legal documents, notices, and responses

4. Risk Management 

• Identify legal risks in projects and business operations

• Advise on risk mitigation strategies

• Review insurance policies and bonds (performance bonds, advance payment guarantees)

• Support claims management for delays and cost overruns

5. Corporate & Advisory Role 

• Provide legal advice to management and project teams

• Support company incorporation, board resolutions, and governance matters

• Maintain legal records, contracts, and case files

• Train staff on legal and contractual awareness

6. Land, Property & Compliance Issues 

• Handle land acquisition, lease agreements, and right-of-way issues

• Verify title deeds and ownership documents

• Manage issues related to expropriation and compensation

• Support project site legal clearances

7. Ethics & Company Protection 

• Ensure ethical business practices and anti-corruption compliance

• Protect company interests in negotiations and claims

• Maintain confidentiality of legal matters

Job Requirements

Skills Required for a Legal Officer in Construction

• LLB with Minimum 4 years relevant experience.

• Strong knowledge of construction law, contract law & Labor proclamation.

• Familiarity with FIDIC contracts (very important in construction

• Negotiation and dispute resolution skills

• Risk analysis and attention to detail.

• Ability to work closely with engineers, finance, and management teams.
