Through integrated development and humanitarian programming, GWEDE aims to address both immediate needs and long-term structural inequalities.
GWEDE is currently implementing donor-funded humanitarian projects under the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF) in partnership with the Partnership for Pastoralist Development (PAPDA) in the Somali Region. To ensure effective WASH programming and compliance with donor requirements, GWEDE is seeking to recruit a qualified and committed WASH Officer.
Role Purpose
The WASH Officer will be responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting WASH activities in accordance with project objectives, donor requirements, and national standards. The position requires strong skills in WASH project planning and implementation, hygiene promotion, and technical and narrative reporting, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with local communities, government line offices, implementing partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
Plan, implement, and monitor WASH project activities in the assigned area.
Support the construction, rehabilitation, and supervision of water supply and sanitation facilities, including the design and follow-up of VIP latrine construction in accordance with donor requirements
Promote hygiene and sanitation practices through community mobilization and behavior change activities.
Coordinate with local government offices, community structures, and relevant stakeholders.
Ensure community participation and inclusion of women and vulnerable groups in WASH activities.
Conduct needs assessments, baseline, and follow-up surveys related to WASH interventions.
Prepare regular progress reports and documentation in line with donor and organizational requirements.
Ensure WASH activities comply with national policies, SPHERE/other standards, and organizational guidelines.
Support capacity building of community WASH committees and local partners.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources, Environmental Health, Public Health, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in WASH project implementation, preferably with NGOs.
Good knowledge of WASH standards, hygiene promotion, and community-led approaches.
Experience working with government offices and community structures.
Strong reporting, communication, and coordination skills.
Ability to work independently in challenging field environments.
Fluency in English and local languages is an asset.
Prior involvement in donor-funded projects (e.g., UN, EU, USIAD) is a plus.
Skills and Competencies:
