Location/duty station: Benshangul Gumuz, Asosa Zone, Kurmuk Woreda Project Site - Fly In/Fly out roster (6/2weeks)

Employment Type: Full-Time | Site-Based

KGM is searching for a motivated Social Development Officer to join our team and to be responsible for facilitating the identification, planning, and implementation of integrated and transformative social development programs in partnership with key stakeholders, ensuring the effective empowerment of human and social capital and contributing to sustainable livelihoods within the local mining communities both within and outside the mining license area. Duties will include but will not be limited to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Community Engagement and Stakeholder Relations:

  • Develop and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with local communities, traditional authorities, local government, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for community members, addressing grievances, providing information, and facilitating dialogue to minimize social conflict and risk to the mine operations.

  • Organize and coordinate community meetings, forums, and awareness campaigns, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up on action items.

Project Implementation and Management:

  • Assist in the implementation of Local Economic Development (LED) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSI) projects as outlined in the Kurmuk Gold Mine Social and Labor Plan (SLP).

  • Facilitate the identification of community needs and resources through community profiling and engagement.

  • Monitor the day-to-day progress of community projects, ensuring they adhere to established timelines, budgets, and quality standards.

  • Coordinate the delivery and storage of equipment and materials for community projects, adhering to health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Socio-Economic Data, Assessments & Planning:

  • Conduct community needs assessments, socio-economic profiling, and household surveys to inform project prioritization.

Livelihood Restoration & Economic Empowerment

  • Support the planning and implementation of livelihood restoration activities for project-affected individuals and groups.

  • Monitor livelihood restoration outcomes and recommend adjustments to ensure sustainability.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Compliance:

  • Ensure contractors contribute positively to community development objectives and comply with Social Performance standards.

  • Monitor contractor-led development or CSR initiatives to ensure alignment, avoid duplication, and maintain quality.

  • Ensure contractors working outside the mining license area follow approved development and engagement protocols.

Capacity Building and Support:

  • Provide support and guidance to local community organizations and project committees.

  • Facilitate capacity-building programs, such as entrepreneurial development or skills training, to empower community members to participate in self-empowerment initiatives.

 Job Requirements

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or MA in Social Sciences, Community Development, Development Studies, or Sociology, Social Work from a recognized institution an appropriate Relevant experience 3-5 years in community development, stakeholder engagement, or project management, preferably within the mining or heavy industry sector.

  • Valid driver’s license with proven driving capabilities and experience.  

Physical Fitness:

  • Medically fit for the position.

Knowledge & Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of local land laws, regulations, and the land acquisition process

  • Strong knowledge of the mining industry and local community dynamics is highly advantageous

  • Social Partner/Community Social Responsibility metrics and reporting

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and stakeholder management databases/CRM systems

  • Familiarity with the local community's demographics, socio-economic dynamics, and political structures is highly beneficial

Communication Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, with high cultural sensitivity and diplomacy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
