We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanic, specialized in welding and fitting, to join our dynamic maintenance team. The ideal candidate will possess a General Mechanic Level 4 or 5 qualifications and a minimum of 8 years of dedicated experience in welding, fabrication, and mechanical fitting roles within a heavy industrial setting. This critical position involves ensuring the structural integrity and operational readiness of our plant's machinery, equipment, and supporting infrastructure. The role demands strong practical skills, a proactive approach to maintenance, and the ability to work effectively and safely in the demanding industrial environment of the Afar region.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Perform advanced welding (SMAW, MIG/MAG, and TIG) and fabrication tasks on various materials (mild steel, stainless steel, etc.) for repairs, modifications, and new installations of plant machinery, structures, and piping.
• Execute precision mechanical fitting, assembly, and alignment of heavy industrial equipment such as crushers, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, motors, and packaging machinery.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and defects, performing timely and effective repairs to minimize downtime and production interruptions.
• Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to execute fabrication, welding, and fitting work accurately.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on mechanical components, identifying potential issues before they escalate.
• Operate and maintain a variety of workshop tools and equipment, including grinders, drills, cutting tools, and lifting equipment, ensuring safe usage.
• Assist in the installation and commissioning of new equipment and machinery.
• Ensure all welding, fitting, and mechanical work adheres strictly to safety standards, quality specifications, and engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with other maintenance technicians and engineers to complete complex repair tasks and troubleshoot systemic issues.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment status.
• Mentor and provide on-the-job training to junior mechanics and apprentices.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications & Experience:
• TVET/Vocational Diploma or Certificate in General Mechanic, Industrial Mechanics, Welding, or a related field, with a proven qualification of Level 4 or 5.
• Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience as a Welder and Fitter Mechanic in a heavy industrial environment, such as manufacturing, processing, mining, or construction.
• Demonstrated proficiency in various welding techniques (SMAW, MIG/MAG, TIG) and ability to perform quality welds on different materials.
• Expertise in mechanical fitting, including precision measurements, alignment, bearing installation, coupling adjustment, and gear assembly.
• Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and fabrication blueprints.
• Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and specialized workshop equipment.
• Solid understanding of industrial safety regulations and best practices, particularly regarding hot work, confined spaces, and working at heights.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Willingness and ability to live and work long-term in the Afar region (Semera City). Resilience and adaptability to the local environment and climate are crucial.
• Excellent physical condition and stamina to perform demanding manual tasks.
• Fluency in Amharic and English is required.
