We are seeking a highly experienced Lab Chemist to join our organization. The ideal candidate will hold a Degree in Industrial Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or a related field, coupled with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in an industrial laboratory or process environment. This critical role involves conducting rigorous chemical analyses of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to ensure compliance with national and international quality standards for iodized salt. The Lab Chemist will be instrumental in maintaining the integrity of our product and contributing to continuous process improvement in the challenging environment of the Afar region.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Perform precise and accurate chemical analyses of raw salt, purified salt, in-process samples, and finished iodized salt products using various analytical techniques and instruments.
• Conduct quantitative analysis for key parameters such as iodine content, moisture, impurities (e.g., insoluble, calcium, magnesium), and other relevant chemical properties.
•Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment including titrators, spectrophotometers, pH meters, balances, and other specialized instruments.
• Prepare reagents, solutions, and standards according to established procedures and ensure their proper storage and handling.
• Record, interpret, and report analytical results accurately and promptly, highlighting any deviations from specifications.
• Implement and adhere strictly to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), safety protocols, and quality management systems (e.g., ISO standards) within the laboratory.
• Assist in troubleshooting process-related chemical issues and provide technical support to production teams to maintain product quality.
• Participate in the development and validation of new analytical methods and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Manage laboratory inventory, ensure proper waste disposal, and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Train and supervise junior lab technicians, if required, ensuring adherence to quality control procedures.

Required Qualifications & Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in an industrial laboratory or process quality control environment, preferably within food processing, chemical manufacturing, or a similar industry.
• Proven hands-on experience with chemical analysis techniques relevant to salt or similar mineral processing (e.g., titration and spectrophotometry).
• Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS), such as ISO 9001, and specific food safety standards.
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining laboratory analytical equipment.
• Strong understanding of laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling protocols.
• Excellent data analysis, report writing, and documentation skills.
• Meticulous attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in all analytical work.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to quality assurance.
• Willingness and ability to live and work long-term in the Afar region (Semera City). Adaptability to the local environment and climate is essential.
• Fluency in Amharic and English (both written and spoken) is required.
• High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and a strong commitment to product quality and safety.
