Context of the mission
For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde (MDM) France, a campaigning medical organization committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organization do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations. MdM currently works in 44 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced people, promoting sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction associated with drug use, emergencies and crisis.
Médecins du Monde is operating in Ethiopia since 1986 in different types of health projects from long-term interventions to emergency response.
MdM France has concentrated its efforts on projects related to access to primary health care (projects centered on rural health facilities and isolated populations), reduction of maternal mortality through improved quality of obstetric care, promotion of sexual and reproductive health rights including protection against gender-based violence, provision of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and reduction of malnutrition.
The nurse will be based in Dehas & Wachile woredas of Oromia region and Hudet Woreda of Somali region. S/he will be under the direct supervision of the medical supervisor based in Dehas/Wachile woreda of Oromia region and Hudet Woreda of Somali region. For technical advice, s/he will consult with the Health Program manager.
Ensure the provision of the seven signal functions of BEmONC
Coordinate all the activities with the Head of the Health Centre and relevant departments (e.g. Pharmacy, EPI, nutrition etc.)
Build the capacity of Health Center health staff to deal with obstetric emergencies and complications
Program/Medical :
Support the management of obstetric emergencies and complications and timely referral at HC.
Mentor and coach health staff on seven signal functions of BEmONC.
Conduct need assessment of the MCH + Family Planning department to identify gaps in equipment, drugs and supplies.
Conduct training assessment needs and develop a training plan.
Ensure that practices are aligned with evidence-based clinical practice in line with the national guidelines and protocols.
Provide compassionate and respectful care at the HC.
Demonstrate behavior that upholds the public trust in the service.
Maintain confidentiality for survivors of SGBV and ensure follow up on the referral pathway
Reporting
Compile monthly project activity report and submit it to the health project manager.
Ensure recordings and completeness of data related to MCH services at the Health Centers.
Conduct immediate analysis and reporting on maternal and neonatal deaths.
Identify clients requiring referral to CEmONC hospital and communicate timely with the facility in-charge/Health officer
Track referrals and report on outcomes to health program coordinator
Conduct needs assessment of the HC regarding equipment, drugs and supplies.
In close collaboration with the HC Head and Pharmacist, work on adequate pharmacy management system to ensure that the drugs provided by the Project are appropriately stored and managed.
Support the implementation of infection and prevention control.
Mentor and coach health staff of the HC on seven signal functions of BEmONC/use of partograph and other MCH+ FP good practices and plan/deliver quality training and follow up.
Implement standards and protocols for MCH plus Family planning services in HC.
Monitoring and Reporting:
Introduce a partograph register for follow up
Submit monthly referral outcome report
Participate in Woreda maternal mortality audit and share report
Prepare a monthly report, including drug/consumables consumption and submit it to Project coordinator.
BSc in Midwifery with at least 3 years’ experience as a midwife in the clinical setting preferably in an emergency setting
Working knowledge of IPC, BEmONC and IMNCI
Flexibility, reactivity, anticipation, adaptability
Good organizational skills in day to day and crisis setting
Computer and reporting skills
Good communication skills
Ability to classify and manage priorities – High autonomy is required
Interest and ability to work in a team
Capacity to work and to live in a remote area with intense conditions and limited resources
Preferred:
Experience/knowledge of the area
Previous experience in mentoring and coaching
Previous experience and/training in BEmONC are an added advantage
Trained in compassionate and respectful care
Languages
Fluency in English and the local language
