Job Description
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Technical Assistant II who will provide overall assistance to the work of the Animal Nutrition laboratory involved in processing and grinding samples, cleaning glassware, maintaining a clean laboratory environment, and entering laboratory data into a computer.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.
Prepares samples for Near Infrared Spectroscopy Reflectance (NIRS) and wet chemistry, including recording, grinding and packing samples, assisting in scanning samples, cleaning and recharging sample containers.
Assists Research Assistant during conventional “wet” chemistry and in vitro analysis required for calibration of NIRS.
Maintaining the lab environment and laboratory stores are well organized and clean.
Cleans glassware and analytical equipment and ensures it is ready for experiments on time.
Collects, records, enters analytical data.
Other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Academic and professional qualifications:
Education:
Natural Science Diploma from a recognized university or High School Complete/Preparatory Certificate level 1
Training in technical laboratory support preferred
Experience:
High school certificate plus a certificate in natural science and two years of relevant experienceOr Diploma in relevant field with one-year relevant experience
Experience for the period noted above as an assistant in a research laboratory preferred plus technical training
Skills:
Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment
Highly motivated, responsible individuals with the ability to support a wide range of laboratory analysis,
Good understanding of English language and operating computer
Duty Station: Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Grade: HG 08
Minimum Base Salary: Birr 17,649 per month
Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site .
