Job Description

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) collaborates with the Ethiopian Government, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partner National Societies, volunteers, and the communities we serve.

In partnership with the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC), ERCS will implement a new project titled “Building Resilience Capacity of Pastoralists in the Somali Region.” This initiative is part of our disaster risk reduction programs aimed at improving food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, improving access to water and health services, and institutional capacity building. The goal is to create resilient households and communities in the target woredas of the region.

The Project Coordinator is responsible for the overall day-to-day program management, team leading, budget management, monitoring, reporting and partnership building with relevant stakeholders through creating, maintaining, and tracking scheduled events and project milestones. He/she ensures effective and efficient project implementation and coordination with targeted communities and relevant stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

I. Project planning, implementation and monitoring:

  • Plan and implement the project according to the work plans/log frame and the standard

  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need

  • Coordinate and supervise project activities at the operational area and office level

  • Conduct assessments, prepare analysis and reports

  • Develop of work plans and provide quality and timely reports of the project progress to the branch head and the headquarters

  • Monitor the progress of the project(s) against work plan, review plans in coordination with the headquarter coordinator and NLRC project delegate, and ensure accomplishment of quality of work against the log frame indicators as outlined in the project proposal

  • Ensure that adequate options for community engagement, accountability and feedback mechanisms are in place and followed up

  • Take account of gender, protection, health risks, the environment, and other cross-cutting concerns in project design, implementation, and reporting

  • Document the project successes, lessons learned, and best practices

  • Report regularly to the Branch head and HQ coordinator on the status of the project activities, challenges faced, actions taken related to implementation of the project

  • Establish and maintain regular communication and coordination with project team at the branch and HQ to avoid miscommunication

  • Ensure proper filing and documentation of project documents both in soft as well as hard copy

  • Support the organization and facilitation of trainings, workshops, and other events when needed

III. Budget management, monitoring and procurements:

  • Prepare regular Budget Follow Up for overall project, in coordination with all relevant team members

  • Prepare the specification of procurement of goods, services, or works, and submit procurement request with the specification timely, follow up, and ensure proper utilization

  • Prepare and analyze CBAs according to ERCS and NLRC’s procurement regulations

  • Ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the budget plan of the activities and the optimum utilization

  • In cooperation with the finance work unit, ensures timely sending of financial documents and reports to the headquarters, and sends cash transfer timely to the headquarters

III. Internal and External project coordination

  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship and collaboration with stakeholders and partners, in all aspects of the project including beneficiary selection, need identification, capacity building, social inclusion and other areas of collaboration

  • Ensure proactive coordination with relevant clusters and partners

  • Represents Red Cross in relevant task force and other meetings, in coordination with the relevant expert of the branch

IV. Team building and communication

  • Establish a positive and supportive team spirit and communication among the project and branch staff

  • Provide daily management and supportive supervision of project activities, including assigning duties and giving feedback to staff members on their performance regularly to ensure high quality work and accurate completion of duties within the agreed time frame

  • Ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in the project management.

  • Conduct performance coaching, mentor and appraise of subordinates, recommend appropriate train to improve the gaps observed

  • Monitor security situation in project area, coordinate regularly with ERCS security advisor at HQ, the ERCS branch manager.

Job Requirements:

  • Second degree or First Degree in Disaster Risk Management/ Development Studies/ WASH, Environmental or public Health, Economics, Agricultural economics, Project management, and or related disciplines. 

  • 8/10 years related work experience, preferably with working experience for Red Cross or an international organization, has an advantage
