Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is an international non-profit organization mandated to work with people around the world to eradicate poverty and injustice. In Ethiopia, NCA has been operating since 1974, marking 50 years of service in the country this year. NCA’s programs are implemented together with local faith-based partners. NCA is a member of various civil society networks, coordination mechanisms, and clusters in Ethiopia. In its current strategic period (2025-2029), NCA Ethiopia implements programs focused on Climate Resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH); Faith-Based Climate Action; Peacebuilding; Gender-Based Violence/Sexual/ Reproductive Health; and Humanitarian Emergency Response.

Position Title: Climate Resilience Program Advisor
Number Required 1 Position
Reports to: Head of Climate Resilience Program
Duty Station: Addis Ababa
Length of Contract: One year with a possibility of extension based on fund availability and performance
Basic Salary: ETB 131,000
Job Summary:
NCA Ethiopia’s Climate Resilience Program operates in six regional states, addressing critical climate challenges through interreligious climate action, economic development, food security, climate and environmental stewardship, and innovative waste management. The program integrates grassroots capacity building with high-level policy engagement, private sector partnerships, and advocacy for sustainable practices, fostering community resilience and sustainable development. By mobilizing diverse stakeholders, including faith leaders, the program promotes environmental stewardship and strengthens Ethiopia's adaptive capacity to climate change.
To scale up its innovative waste management and circular economy initiatives, NCA Ethiopia seeks to hire a Climate Resilience Program Advisor (W4V project). This role will focus on expanding successful models, coordinating with stakeholders, and driving impactful interventions. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in waste management, project coordination, and policy advocacy, ensuring that NCA's efforts align with community needs and national priorities while achieving measurable outcomes in environmental sustainability.
The position holder will primarily engage in the Waste for Value scaling-up project at NCA-Ethiopia, providing technical support and guidance to implementing partners, SMEs, and other stakeholders. The role involves fostering collaboration among diverse actors, ensuring the effective implementation of project activities, and contributing to the achievement of sustainable outcomes. Additionally, the position holder will play a key role in monitoring and evaluation, ensuring timely and high-quality reporting, and driving evidence-based improvements throughout the project lifecycle.
1.Project Coordination and Leadership
Support the implementation and management of the waste collection and recycling project, in close coordination with implementing partners and other stakeholders.
Ensure that all project activities are aligned with NCA’s goals, timelines, and quality standards.
2. Linking SMEs with Recycling Companies:
Facilitate connections between SMEs and recycling companies to promote collaboration and business development.
Provide guidance and support to SMEs in negotiating partnerships or collaborations with recycling companies.
Ensure that SMEs are aware of available opportunities for engaging with the recycling sector to enhance their business models.
3. Experience-Sharing Visits:
Organize and facilitate experience-sharing visits for SMEs to established recycling companies.
Coordinate logistics, ensure the SMEs can observe recycling operations firsthand, and provide a platform for them to learn best practices from these companies.
Ensure that the visits are impactful by providing SMEs with opportunities to ask questions, discuss challenges, and explore solutions to common issues.
4. Training and Capacity Building:
Design and conduct training sessions and workshops for SMEs to improve their technical, operational, and business management skills.
Develop high-quality training materials and ensure that content is practical and relevant to new as well as existing SMEs
Provide continuous mentorship to SMEs, ensuring that they implement the knowledge gained in training effectively.
5. Project Monitoring and Evaluation:
Oversee the collection, compilation, and analysis of operational data from SMEs, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
Monitor and evaluate the progress of the project regularly, using performance indicators and other data sources to track impact.
Conduct field visits to observe project implementation, engage with SMEs, and provide on-the-ground support.
Prepare comprehensive progress reports for NCA, detailing achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.
6. Field Visits and Stakeholder Engagement:
Lead and participate in regular field visits to operational areas to monitor project progress, engage with local communities, and assess the effectiveness of the project activities.
Coordinate and facilitate monthly meetings with SMEs, implementing partners, and the technical working groups to discuss project outcomes, share challenges, and strategize for improvements.
Foster and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders, including government authorities, community groups, and other partners to ensure continued project support.
7. Strategic Planning and Problem Solving:
Actively participate in the strategic planning process for the project, ensuring that goals are realistic, measurable, and aligned with NCA’s vision.
Proactively identify potential risks and challenges and develop mitigation strategies to address any issues that may arise during the project implementation phase.
Provide recommendations for scaling up successful aspects of the project and exploring new opportunities for sustainability and impact.
8. Reporting and Documentation:
Prepare a draft of a PowerPoint presentation for monthly meetings with the donor, showcasing project progress, key achievements, challenges, and next steps.
Oversee the preparation of detailed reports, ensuring accurate data collection and analysis related to project progress, outcomes, and challenges.
Maintain detailed documentation of training activities, field visits, stakeholder engagement, and other project-related activities.
Ensure all reports and presentations meet NCA's quality standards and are submitted on time for review.
Required qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Health, Waste Management, Natural Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
At least 5 years of experience in project management, technical support, or working with SMEs in waste management, recycling, or environmental sustainability projects.
Proven track record of managing and implementing donor-funded projects, preferably in the waste management or environmental sector.
Experience with monitoring projects, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Demonstrated skills in planning, monitoring, organizing, and networking.
Excellent interpersonal skills to promote effective collaboration within staff, across partner organizations & stakeholders
Desirable skills, and personal qualities:
Strong technical expertise in waste management, recycling, and sustainable business practices.
Leadership and team management skills, with the ability to guide SMEs.
Interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and other relevant software for data management, reporting, and communication.
Knowledge of the socio-economic contexts in the country, policy and roadmaps related to waste management and circular economies, and local waste management practices is a significant advantage.
The Advisor should have respect, integrity, and team player attributes and be keen to respect the policies and procedures of NCA.
