Job Description

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position.

 Purpose of the Job:

Assist in the development and implementation of advocacy and campaign strategies to enhance the promotion and protection of economic and social human rights in Ethiopia.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director to develop advocacy and campaign plan and engagement strategy on priority human rights issues;

  • Conduct awareness raising and campaigns on economic and social human rights to ensure adherence to national and international protection standards and guidelines;

  • Design, implement, monitor and evaluate programs and projects on the promotion and protection of economic and social human rights;

  • Conduct assessments, identification, and mappings of economic and social protection needs;

  • Assist in the execution of economic and social legislative and policy initiatives;

  • Communicate with and influence a range of external stakeholders and advocacy targets including the Government and relevant authorities on the basis of identified gaps for the effective promotion and protection of economic and social human rights and to give them voice;

  • Support in conducting research and analysis to formulate advocacy briefs and calls for the promotion and protection of the economic and social human rights;

  • Support in conducting legal review in relation to economic and social rights to write advocacy and campaign messages and materials for amendment or enactment of laws to ensure compliance with constitutional, international and regional human rights standards;

  • Organize and manage advocacy and campaign events; initiate nationwide and regional movement to advocate and campaign for the promotion and protection of economic and social human rights, including the ratification and implementation of relevant international and regional human rights instruments;

  • Ensure mainstreaming of economic and social as relevant in other EHRC’s advocacy and campaign;

  • Ensure the integration of gender perspectives, with specific attention to issues related to economic and social;

  • Contribute to building capacity, knowledge, values and standards based on identified needs of both governmental and non-governmental national stakeholders on economic and social rights;

  • Coordinate the follow up of the implementation of recommendations, general comments and concluding observations of international and regional treaty bodies that are related to the rights of economic and social at the national level;

  • Support in managing close relationships with relevant national and international stakeholders to advance cooperation and collaboration, including other NHRIs and international and regional human rights networks;

  • Support the identification and assistance of capacity building needs of both governmental and non-governmental national stakeholders on economic and social rights;

  • Participate in discussion forums set in institutions and organizations, including other NHRIs for joint programming, sharing of experience and promising practices, regarding the promotion and protection of economic and social rights in their policies and organizational operations;

  • Keep the Director informed with regular detailed and accurate reports on progress and challenges in advocating and campaigning for the promotion and protection of economic and social rights conducted by the Team;

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • LLB/LLM in Human Rights Law, International Law.

  • 4 years of relevant experience LLB and 2 years of relevant experience for LLM

  • Computer literate

  • Knowledge of Amharic and English is required

  • Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.
