Job Title: Hygiene & Sanitation Assistant
Number required: 3 positions
Reports to: WASH Officer
Duty Station: Korem, Chercher, and Ofla Woredas
Length of Contract: 1 year
Basic Salary:ETB 25,000
Job Summary:
The post holder will provide strategic guidance and leadership to emergency sanitation and hygiene intervention for the specific project. S/he participates in hygiene campaigns, door-to-door hygiene promotion, and mass hygiene promotion. S/he will conduct continuous hygiene promotion to the targeted community in coordination with the community volunteer hygiene promoters and the existing government structure. S/he prepares written material and clear and adapted messages for the rightsholders. S/he distributes hygiene items and can prepare hygiene promotion plans; lead the design, monitoring, and evaluation of Norwegian Church Aid’s emergency-related sanitation and hygiene components and give technical support to the field teams and represent the NCA Zonal Hygiene and Sanitation forum and clusters.
Actively participate and coordinate with Emergency WASH Officer and existing local government and community structures for the smooth operation of Water tracking for the emergency projects.
Support WASH Teams on water quality testing at water sources and households, sanitary assessment of water sources, and mobilization for creative measures to identify potential sources of contamination.
In Liaison with the Emergency WASH Officer support the HSP to conduct assessments of barriers, enabling factors and development of effective communication methods/channels to instigate changes in key behaviors and develop, design, modify, or adopt culturally appropriate media, messages, and IEC materials to promote health, sanitation, and hygiene behavior.
Support Emergency WASH Officer on implementation of health, hygiene, and sanitation promotion activities in a participatory manner and make optimal use of the existing community hygiene promoters, local government, Community Volunteer Hygiene Promoters and community structures for health, hygiene, and sanitation promotion.
Support to implement project innovations and learning components like promotion of solar disinfection (SODIS) and CLTS in identified & planned Kebeles and assist NCA to evaluate impact, document learning, and propose strategies with potential for scale-up.
Support Project Officer for better collaboration with Woreda Health Offices in building the capacity of Health Extension Workers and Hygiene promotion volunteers in participatory methodologies for the successful accomplishment of the emergency wash project.
Support Emergency WASH Officer on the use of Woreda Education & Health offices in entrenching sanitation and hygiene in their relevant programs (in schools and health centers) to maximize the benefits of improved or existing water supply and other social services provided in these institutions.
With the support Emergency WASH Officer and in collaboration with woreda health officials and health facility staff, establish accountability mechanisms including community information boards and complaints mechanisms set up and made functional at each health facility.
Support WASH Officer and other sector officers in collaboration other staff and woreda health officials.
Provide necessary support to the Community Facilitators for the implementation of health-related activities within the communities.
Convince all households of the importance of good hygiene practices.
Participate in hygiene campaigns, doing shows in schools and at the community level Animate focus groups, giving clear messages on good hygiene practices.
Data collection regarding the project and potential beneficiaries
Distribution of water and sanitation items in collaboration with WASH officer
Coordination
Working together with other governmental and non-government bodies and WASH team members support in ensuring hygiene & sanitation are integrated with all the sector activities.
Ensure coordination with regional, zonal, and woreda water, health & education sectors in all aspects of project activities implementation including attending relevant meetings that may be organized from time to time.
Identify and establish good relationships with all key stakeholders in the sector at the woreda level, particularly with woreda health officials and other administrative and community structures and ensure their engagement in programme implementation and management.
Develop good relations with other NGOs, development, and UN agencies, etc working in the sector at the woreda level and where possible forge alliances to influence key actors when necessary.
Submit biweekly and/or monthly program activity plans and reports to the Emergency WASH Officer.
Report the progress of the work and possible problems or conflicts during the activities.
Report the use of materials and possible improvements.
In consultation with the Emergency WASH Officer, conduct regular monitoring of program activities to determine the success of interventions and recommend changes where or as necessary.
Support in baseline and evaluation Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) surveys by the CMs.
Minimum Qualification Required:
Diploma in Rural Sanitation, Environmental Health Science, Public Health, Health Education and Promotion, Community Health, or related field.
4 years’ experience in sanitation and hygiene promotion in humanitarian organizations.
Competencies required for all emergency response staff:
Professional fluency in written and spoken English language is mandatory.
Proven skills in computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and statistical packages such as Kobo).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations at all levels are mandatory.
Proven experience in effective coordination and creating working relations with the other team members and stakeholders.
Proactive, stable, and robust character and a good team player to achieve a short-term emergency response.
Excellent skills in report writing and meeting deadlines with limited supervision.
Demonstrated ability to work in an emergency, preferably in drought-affected and IDP contexts.
Proven commitment to CHS and accountability practices. Prior knowledge of the Ethical Commitments of NCA is a plus.
Able to show tact and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
Responsibility to NCA values and Ethical Commitments.
Experience in working in challenging environments.
Proven ability to manage large, varied workloads and deal constructively with stress and periods with long hours.
Knowing the local language is a plus.
