A brief introduction to the British Council

We uniquely combine the UK’s deep expertise in arts and culture, education and the English language, our global presence, and relationships in over 100 countries, our unparalleled access to young people and influencers and our creative sparkle. We support them to build networks and explore creative ideas, to learn English, to get a high-quality education and to gain internationally recognised qualifications. We work with governments and our partners in the education, English language, and cultural sectors in the UK and globally. Working together we make a bigger difference creating benefits for millions of people all over the world.

Background to the Programme

English for Girls’ Education is our work with girls who are out of school or living in socio-economically disadvantaged or isolated communities, where language is often a barrier to girls’ education. Our work in this area provides adolescent girls with opportunities to learn English and other core skills such as digital literacy and to discuss social issues that affect their lives. This work is designed to empower girls, provide agency, and voice, and enable them to make more informed life choices in the future. The programme has been implemented and succussed in Southeast Asia countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia.

Objectives of English for Girls' Education

The programme's primary objective is to address gender equality issues and empower women and girls, particularly those who are marginalised. The British Council is committed to reducing gender disparities globally, and the programme aims to reduce barriers to gender equality by working with partners to ensure that everyone can reach their full potential. The programme's focus on building the resilience of adolescent girls is particularly important in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the negative impacts of climate change, both of which disproportionately affect women and girls.

English for Girls' Education Core Activity

English for Girls’ Education builds on our tried and tested English and Digital for Girls’ Education (EDGE) programme approach in South Asia which will form an integral part of the English for Girls’ Education portfolio. EDGE employs evidence-based methodology in girls’ education and empowerment programmes which provide a low-cost, scalable way to reach thousands of girls and engage with a large number of parents and community leaders.

The societal value of English and digital skills within the communities and with the girls, alongside the engaging methodology and focus on life skills, has proved a key driver for the programme’s success.

As programme delivery progresses, we seek to expand the English for Girls education portfolio into new countries and contexts. Taking lessons learned from the EDGE projects and looking at how the programme could be adapted for new markets.
