Job Description
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate I position to carry out and oversee all forage regeneration, multiplication and characterization, and field research work at the Debre Zeit/Bishoftu field site.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South, and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern, and West Africa. www.ilri.org.
Carry out forage germplasm regeneration and multiplication at Debrezeit/Bishoftu, maintaining plots weed-free and correctly labeled;
Undertake the harvesting and processing of the mature forage germplasm and seeds;
Record monthly field observations and forage characterization data and undertake analysis as guided;
Liaise with the genebank database team on field data curation and retrieval;
Supervise and guide the field attendants and casuals working in the field site;
Monitor for pests and diseases in the field and take remedial action;
Collect herbarium specimens as deemed necessary;
Assists in the general implementation of research activities at the site, including supporting training courses in the production and handling of quality forage/seed production when required;
Maintain inventory of the reagents and equipment at Debrezeit/Bishoftu site;
Other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Education and Experience:
BSc degree with at least one year’s work experience, or, a college Diploma with three years relevant experience in plant sciences, horticulture, agriculture, or related fields.
Demonstrated knowledge from the experience of working in farm management in agriculture field operations or forage/crop seed production and proficiency in the use of related tools and equipment.
Skills:
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and basic skills using statistical computer packages.
Knowledge of handling agrochemicals/a spray certificate would be considered advantageous.
Effective communication in English and interpersonal skills
Rigorous approach to monitoring the progress of tasks
Experience in forage crops is advantageous.
Duty Station: Debre Zeit/Bishoftu, Ethiopia
Grade: HG 10
Minimum Base Salary: Birr 24,354 per month (negotiable depending on the salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, an offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa.
