The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) seek to recruit a Research Project Coordinator – Seed Source who will lead and coordinate the planning, establishment, management, assessment, and documentation of tree seed orchards and vegetative material mother blocks nationally. Participate in and contribute to the overall management of the PATSPO Project under the supervision of the CR and STL. Supervise the PATSPO staff mentioned above. position who will provide clerical support to the program.

Leads and coordinates the tree improvement (including seed source development and field gene conservation) within the project;
Coordinate and liaison the tree improvement and gene conservation programmes of Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD) and other institutions in Ethiopia;
Ensures the timely implementation of the seed source development programme as outlined in the Project Document and the Annual Work Plans;
In collaboration with the Seed Procurement Officer plan, supervise and assist in national seed source exploration, description, and registration;
In collaboration with EFD and the Seed Procurement Officer compile, maintain and update the National Tree Seed Source Registry (NTSSR);
In collaboration with the Seed Procurement Officer responsible for coordination and monitoring of seed demand, establishment of seed sources, and seed collection planning and implementation;
Ensures and coordinates the priorities of integrated seed procurement/tree improvement/gene conservation, plans, prepares and implements the activities accordingly;
Responsible to prepare and implement annual work plans in the subject matter;
Responsible for preparing and following up on subject matter budgets.
Coordinates and manages the planning and establishment of seed stands cum ex situ stands and/or seed orchards (BSOs/SSOs) of selected priority species;
Monitor project support to the subject matter and liaise with the programme of EFD and the RFCs in planning, coordination, and supervision of the establishment of species, provenance and/or progeny orchards/mother blocks/trials/conservation stands for selected priority species on different sites and in different seed zones;
Coordinates and supports the planning and implementation of applied research and data recording.
Coordinate and guide staff in seed source development and management methods;
Carry out networking with other professionals, organizations, institutions, projects, etc. in Ethiopia and the region;
Participate in coordination meetings and other internal and external project-related meetings as required;
Assist in the planning, preparation, and implementation of staff development programmes, including local and overseas fellowships, study tours, seminars, workshops, etc.;
Assist, support and participate in the work of technical consultants.
Education
PhD degree or MSc degree in forestry or a related field with a postgraduate specialization in tree improvement, and with a broad understanding of tree seed procurement.
Experience:
Master’s degree with nine years or PhD degree with two years of post-graduate working experience including experience in research in tree improvement and tree seed procurement. Post-graduate studies in either of the two subjects and/or experience from similar positions elsewhere will be an additional advantage. Experience in leading and providing technical guidance to national and international research and development projects /programmes in tree improvement and tree seed procurement in Ethiopia will be an additional advantage.
Skills:
In-depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field
Familiarity with development and relevant research techniques in the subject matters
Ability to plan work with multi-facetted activities in the office as well as in the field
Computer literacy i.e. knowledge in MS Office
Ability to analyze data and prepare progress records and reports
Manages staff in their day-to-day activities
Updates relevant manuals/protocols
Flexible on work hours including travel and extended fieldwork
Follows policies and procedures
Prepares progress reports for review
Provides candid and helpful feedback taking into consideration the job grade of the person
Aware of the impact of own work
Make decisions within own area of work and request approval from supervisor when needed.
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Job Grade: HG 16
Monthly Base Salary: Birr 116,866 (Negotiable depending on the salary history of the candidate).
Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for eighteen months with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salaries and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plans, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa.
