About the Luminos Fund:
The Luminos Fund (www.luminosfund.org) works to ensure no child is ever denied an education, whether by poverty, crisis, or discrimination. The Luminos Fund, an international nonprofit bringing education opportunities to the world’s most vulnerable children, is looking for a Teaching and Learning Program Manager to lead the development of structured pedagogy materials that align with the Ethiopian Primary School curriculum and enhance learning outcomes in the Luminos accelerated learning program streams. The Teaching and Learning Program Manager will be driven by a desire to ensure all students are learning. He or she will work closely with the Impact and Ethiopia Programs team to use qualitative and quantitative data to inform the development of Teaching and Learning and student assessment materials. He or she will be expected to design and deliver effective trainings on structured pedagogy and to engage with government officials to build buy-in for this new approach. The successful candidate will work closely with the Ethiopia country team and the technical Teaching and Learning team based in London. He or she will be required to manage teams of consultants and subject matter experts to develop materials for different regions and program contexts.
Teachers' Guide Preparation and Implementation:
Direct the design, development, and implementation of structured teachers' guides tailored to the Ethiopian Primary Schools curriculum and the Accelerated Learning Program condensed curriculum.
Manage teams of subject and language experts to produce grade-level appropriate content for structured teachers’ guides in different languages.
Collaborate with the Luminos Fund Ethiopia and Teaching and Learning team members to design and deliver effective trainings on structured pedagogy and to ensure the effective utilization of guides in Luminos Second Chance as well as government adoption classrooms.
Reading Materials Preparation:
Coordinate the development of culturally relevant and age-appropriate reading materials aligned with the Ethiopian Primary Schools curriculum.
Collaborate with the Luminos Fund Ethiopia and Teaching and Learning team members to ensure the quality and inclusivity of reading materials.
Structured Pedagogy Promotion:
Develop and implement strategies to promote the use of structured pedagogy tools tailored to the Ethiopian Primary Schools curriculum.
Coordinate engagement activities with regional and woreda-level education officials to build government buy-in for the structured pedagogy approach.
Collaborate with the Luminos Fund Ethiopia team to integrate effective teaching methods into the context of Ethiopian classrooms.
Phonics-Based Literacy:
Design and oversee the implementation of phonics-based literacy initiatives suitable for Ethiopian early grades.
Provide guidance and resources to Luminos Fund Ethiopia IPs for the seamless integration of phonics in teaching practices.
Coaching Implementing Partners:
Work closely with the Luminos Fund Ethiopia IPs to enhance their capabilities in promoting literacy in early grades.
Provide coaching and support to IPs, ensuring the alignment of literacy initiatives with local educational contexts.
Monitoring and Evaluating Reading Progress:
Conduct classroom observation visits across Luminos program sites to evaluate learning and provide on-the-spot coaching and feedback to facilitators and IP supervisors.
Establish, adapt, and implement a regular tracking system to assess the reading progress of students in the Luminos Fund and IPs supported classrooms.
Analyze data to identify areas of improvement, considering the unique challenges and opportunities within the local education landscape.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education, literacy, or a related field; master’s degree preferred. Extensive experience as an educator may also be considered.
Proven experience in program management with a focus on literacy enhancement in Ethiopian early grades.
Deep knowledge of the Ethiopian primary education curriculum, structured pedagogy, and phonics-based approaches to literacy.
Strong coaching and mentoring skills, particularly within the Ethiopian educational context.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Demonstrated experience in assessing reading progress of early grade students.
Demonstrated experience designing and delivering training and/or direct coaching.
Fluency in Amharic and at least one other Ethiopian language preferred.
