Job Description
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to hire employees in the following vacant positions the details of which are mentioned bellow.
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee and 5871 Kebele Red Cross committees.
ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.
The project officer supports the project management in Benishangul Gumuz, under the DG ECHO (Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations) funded ECHO HIP 2023 project (Multi-sectorial Project). His/her tasks include contributing to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, timely and quality reporting as per the provided formats and standards. He/she also facilitates partnership building with relevant stakeholders (mainly zonal and woreda level government counterparts). The Project Officer is directly accountable in following up project activities in Metekel and ensuring their completion within the timeline set, allocated budget as per the project document, with standard quality and in relation to the MoU between the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) and Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS). Details on the ECHO project to be implemented in Metekel are outlined below:
The ECHO multisectoral project (WASH, Health and Disaster Risk Reduction) which is implemented in consortium between Ethiopian Red Cross, Netherlands Red Cross (lead partner), Danish Red Cross, German Red Cross and Austrian Red Cross. The WASH activities are to be implemented in Benishangul-Gumuz, Amhara and Tigray regions. This includes WASH hardware and software activities, namely rehabilitation of water supply and sanitation systems, hygiene promotion activities and providing technical trainings to volunteers and community members.
The two projects are implemented in the same geographic areas - Amhara, Tigray and Benishangul-Gumuz - and implementation should be closely aligned and should ensure that protection mainstreaming is integrated in all the activities.
Support Project Management
Support the project management of the ECHO projects in Benishangul Gumuz region, including preparation of plans, following up on timely and quality implementation and reporting of the project progress. Take timely and appropriate action to address delays and challenges in relation to project implementation when needed.
Monitor the progress on implementation of the project’s activities against the plan of action, indicators, and approved budget.
Support capacity building of the branch staff to achieve better results through the implementation of project activities together
Support WASH activities and training of volunteers, staff and local government stakeholders as needed for implementation, in coordination with the project coordinator.
Ensure the Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) approach is included in data collection, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project execution.
Report regularly to the Project coordinator on the status of the project activities in Metekel, challenges faced and actions taken related to the implementation of the project.
Monitor project’s financial management in coordination with ERCS project coordinator, ERCS Senior Finance and Administration Officer and ERCS project accountant.
Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all related information of the project by implementing the National Society’s relevant policy and procedures.
In consultation with the Project Coordinator and the regional branch, liaise with external partners, including government partner offices in Benishangul Gumuz, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders.
Act as a liaison between the project and relevant stakeholders to ensure efficient inclusion of the high risk and vulnerable groups of the community.
Establish and promote smooth communication among regional branch and field level staffs, project beneficiaries and the community at large.
Contribute to coordination and sharing of lessons learned, good practices and tools with ERCS and other stakeholders.
Represent the project in meetings and workshops at zonal level when needed. Prepare reports, briefings, background information, narratives, and statistical reporting as necessary and required.

Terms of employment: Nine month
Place of Work: ERCS, Benishangul Gumuz branch – Metekel zonal office
Salary: 28,416.00
Qualification Requirements:
MSC and/or BSC degree in disaster risk management, project management, development studies, environmental health, public health or another relevant field of expertise.
Minimum of 4/6 years of relevant NGO supported project/programme management experience and expertise is required.
Proven work experience in relevant areas such as WASH, health, and CVA is an asset.
Proven project management and coordination skills and experience.
Knowledge of other Ethiopian languages (relevant for Benishangul Gumuz) is an asset.
Commitment to Ethiopian Red Cross values and ethical standards.
Excellent coordinator and communication skills with strong interpersonal and coaching skills.
Demonstrated orientation on results, process, and people.
Cultural awareness is essential and previous experience in a multi-cultural environment.
Good IT skills in particular in Microsoft Office Application (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point) etc.
Good communication skills (fluency in both written and spoken communication) in Amharic and English.
