About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Due to COVID19, conflict in Ukraine and climate change, malnutrition and hunger have worsened significantly since 2019, reversing a decade of progress. There is growing recognition that our food systems need to change if we are to reverse these trends.

GAIN’s Strategy aims to transform food systems to make healthier diets from sustainable food systems accessible to all people and especially those whose are most vulnerable to shocks. By 2027, we aim to improve the access of 1.5 billion people to nutritionally enhanced staple foods, improve the access of 25 million people to healthier diets, and support positive food system change in 10 countries. This is bold and complex, and the only way to achieve this is to work together with partners including governments, businesses, and civil society at the country and global level. These goals, and the ways of achieving them, build on our twenty-year legacy of transforming people’s lives with improved nutrition through concerted action and effective policy change.

About the Role

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Project Coordinator, Fortification Advocacy and Partnerships to support the project deliveries of Fortification Advocacy projects in GAIN Ethiopia. This role will be offered on a fixed term contract basis up to 18 months, subject to availability of funding. You will be based in GAIN’s Ethiopia office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational delivery, implementation and monitoring of the project, specifically focusing on tracking progress and status of project activities. You will play a coordination role in GAIN’s cross-functional project teams and supporting the maintenance of relationships with partners and stakeholders.

The Project Coordinator will support the execution of GAIN Ethiopia’s advocacy strategy to increase political will and private sector support for mandatory edible oil and wheat flour fortification in Ethiopia. A particular focus of this position will be to support GAIN’s partnerships with fortification stakeholder groups such as the spina bifida community, fortified food producers, etc.

You will also assist with other project activities regarding GAIN’s large scale food fortification (LSFF) portfolio in Ethiopia as needed. The workstation will be based in Addis Ababa with 30% travel across the country as and when appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Aiding with the management of project schedule, activity plan and planning milestones, supporting with the tracking of progress and deliverables from project partners and implementing countries

  • Drafting necessary project documentation during the design, planning and end-to-end implementation of the project as per the GAIN Project Management Guidelines (PMG) i.e., results framework, work plans etc.

  • Supporting with the implementation of national mandatory fortification programmes for edible oil and wheat flour in Ethiopia and strengthening Ethiopia’s national salt iodization program, regularly revisiting and modifying the strategy to accommodate new learning and recent developments as advised by the project manager

  • Supporting engagement of key national stakeholders (i.e., parent advocates, doctors, youth advocates, and others) to support mandatory wheat and oil fortification in Ethiopia.

  • Engaging new stakeholder groups and organisations with good potential to partner with GAIN as advocates for fortification

  • Identifying, escalating, tracking and resolving project issues on an ongoing basis and proactively reporting to the Project Manager issues which requires wider attention and resolution

  • Supporting the Project Manager with the preparation of donor reports in collaboration with project teams, technical teams, funding team and support teams

  • Developing appropriate narrative reporting and financial accounting documentation for the Project Manager’s review to meet GAIN and donor’s requirements

  • Facilitating accurate project budgeting and forecasting processes, ensuring that activities costs are kept within budgets

  • Developing Terms of Reference for project consultants/suppliers hired on a short-term basis and ensuring proper delivery of technical services and submission of technical and other reports within ethical and procurement standards and guidelines

Job Requirements

  • A recognized international accreditation in a project management or Bachelor’s degree in business management, international relations, sustainable development, economics, development studies, peace and conflict studies, public policy, communications, food science, nutrition or related field.

  • The ideal candidate will have proven experience in project management and using basic advocacy tools such as power analysis, stakeholder analysis, SWOT analysis and developing a theory of change and action plan.

  • Candidates with experience in technical assistance to SMEs on business model development, business support services, production and supply chain management is desirable.

  • In addition, you will have professional experience working in public policy/advocacy/communications in project coordination role and strong ability to work with diverse groups/individuals, ranging from local partners, local authorities, local community groups, civil society, and the private sector.

  • Candidates with focus in nutrition or private public partnerships, private sector development or international development fields would be an advantage.

  • The postholder should possess excellent communication skills, fluent in written and spoken English and able to work effectively in a multicultural environment, candidates with knowledge of second language within GAIN’s regional offices is desirable.

  • In addition, you should be highly flexible and willing and able to travel.

  • You will be computer literate in Microsoft Office and with advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages as well as experience in handling of web-based management systems.

  • The starting salary on offer for this role is from USD 14,184 – USD 16,224 per annum (gross salary), depending on experience.

  • GAIN has a fair and competitive salary structure that allows for annual progression subject to good performance.
