ORDAETHIOPIA is a non-governmental organization dedicated to improve livelihood and environmental security in Amhara Region as well as in Ethiopia since 1984 G.C. It envisaged to bring the above changes in the community by working on environment and climate change, water and irrigation, agriculture, nutrition and disaster risk management, gender, disability inclusion and youth Employment and food commodity management and emergency response interventions. Program overview

Mass Youth Employment in Apiculture (MaYEA) program is a five-year youth employment creation program funded by Master Card Foundation to be implemented in 9(nine) regions of Ethiopia. The program is divided in to two sub national hubs. ORDA Ethiopia, as a lead organization will coordinate the implementation of program in 61 woredas of the North and North West Ethiopia hub of the program includes Amhara, Afar, Benishangul Gumuz and Tigray Regions. The program plans to help jobless youth to create jobs for themselves by participating them mainly in apiculture value chain and other complimentary value chains. The main interventions of the program are i) increasing national honey and bees wax production; ii) improving honey quality to meet both national and international standards; iii) promoting market-driven value addition and product diversification; iv) enhancing integration of apiculture with other complementary value chains; and  v) improving enabling environment for youth and apiculture sector development.

Position Summary:

The main role of this position owner is to lead the coordination efforts of the apiculture related interventions of the program. Provide the technical support and capacity development to the program staff, lead for the effective and efficient implementation of the apiculture value chain in the intervention areas of the program. 

Duties and Responsibilities

• Map existing beekeepers and support them to transform into commercial apiculture business owners.

• Technically leads the implementation of apiculture related activities and results of the program. 

• Ensure effective operational planning of apiculture related interventions and activities, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, reporting and communications with partners and stakeholders is in place. 

• Provide technical backstopping to clusters and woreda based officers.

• Ensure that 80% of program participants are women in apiculture enterprise and value chain 

• Ensures the timely supply of beekeeping tools, bees, and honey extraction materials for youth led agribusiness organized by the support of the program. 

• Lead the identifying of commercial opportunities and conduct market analysis for apiculture value chain. Map national, regional and international market channels. 

• Ensure the value addition in the value chain-safety and quality of the product, branding and labeling, social, gender related and environmental norms and sustainability standards.  

• Impact the value addition of youth enterprises apiculture products through quality assurance, packaging and marketing. 

• Provide ToT to the IPs, government and private apiculture experts in relation to apiculture and related matters 

• Ensure the strengthening of government-private apiculture extension system. 

• Leads apiculture production aggregation, value addition and market driven works. 

• Ensure holistic approach is implemented to apiculture-centered value chains. 

• Ensure innovation and technology based approach is used to transform production, marketing and financial services. 

• Ensure that all ecosystem actors are engaged to create enabling environment for the flourishing of apiculture based agribusinesses. 

• Suggest improvement in the value chain system to ensure direct linkages of the youth agribusinesses with major markets. 

• Ensure ORDA Ethiopia Safeguarding policy is effectively implemented and report any form of abuse to the safeguarding officer

• Conduct other activities as deemed necessary.

Job Requirements

Minimum qualifications and requirements:

Educational background

• MSc in apiculture/Beekeeping, Livestock Production

Work Experience

• Minimum of 8(eight) years with relevant experience of four years.

• Two years of experience in managerial positions.  

• International NGO work experience is advantageous

• Strong understanding and practical experience with good practice in agribusiness development, value chains development, domestic and international marking and trade development. 

• Specific experience in apiculture commodity value chain, including processing of honey and honey/wax for international marketing. 

Skills/Knowledge and Competencies

• Willing to innovate, design and plan catalytic and implementable interventions to address major value chain, institutional and operational bottlenecks. 

• Strong stakeholder management skills, including thorough extensive experience with government institutions, development partners, private sector stakeholders and youth agribusiness groups.

• Strong communication and facilitation skills. 

• Demonstrated team player 

• Ability to work in and perform under pressure and in a dynamic fast paced environment. 

• Excellent report writing in English. 

• Advanced computer skills
