Organization Background

JSI is a US-based public health nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality technical and managerial assistance programs throughout the world. In Ethiopia, JSI has been working to improve health outcomes for more than 25 years, implementing more than 60 projects and working in every region. JSI has historically managed a large portfolio of projects focusing on the quality, and equity in access of, RMNCAH services, primary health care (PHC) including community health program, digital health, health information systems (HIS), supply chain management, public health emergency responses, and social and behavior change.

Activity Overview

USAID Quality Healthcare Activity (QHA) aims at improving health outcomes through improved readiness of health facilities to deliver quality reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) services, increased management and accountability for quality service delivery, and restoration of services in health facilities in conflict-affected areas. QHA's strategies and implementation approaches will help Ethiopia's government build responsive, resilient, and sustainable public and private healthcare systems. QHA will cover urban and peri-urban primary health care units (PHCU) and referral health facilities in select regions and woredas. The Activity, through funding support from USAID, will be implemented by JSI in collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), MSI Reproductive Choices (MSI), Project HOPE, and Network of Ethiopian Women's Associations (NEWA) for five years (May 01, 2023 - April 30, 2028).

Role Summary        

The communications intern will be a part of a dynamic knowledge management and communications team. S/he will be responsible for handling internal administrative procedures related to the services provided (e.g., drafting terms of references, overseeing contract requests, following up on payments, as well as registration of all orders made). The intern will provide support to the activity’s communication work, e.g., contributing ideas and content to the development of stories, news items, interviews etc. including for social media engagement, through conducting research and collecting information for the preparation of social media posts, speeches, press releases, or any type of written piece for communication purposes. S/he will also assist in relevant organizing meetings, events, and workshops etc., and support and follow up on the production of digital and printed communication products developed by the activity. The intern will also support the knowledge management and communication team in their communication activities as assigned by the knowledge management and team lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with the activity’s knowledge management and communication strategy and branding guidelines as well as that of USAID.

  • Carry out any tasks relevant to the activity which may not be explicitly mentioned in the job description but lie in its nature and as assigned by the knowledge management and communications lead.

  • Collaborate with technical teams for communication support requests.

  • Create content that is consumable and actionable by the intended audience/recipients.

  • Develop and seek out content for websites, social media pages, and public communications and write drafts.

  • Collaborate with procurement staff to formulate and produce promotional materials.

  • Collect content for the development of activity templates and standard presentations.

  • Coordinate and assist the content development for different print and online media.

  • Measure and monitor website and social media traffic statistics.

  • Monitor the increase in traffic due to new content and take actions accordingly to improve the traffic metrics.

  • Brainstorm and suggest new ways to improve social media traffic by tapping into new platforms and channels.

  • Ensure that content is compliant with donor and implementing organization requirements.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field.

  • Fresh Graduate with a 3. 0 cumulative GPA and above

  • Passion for the topic of public health.

  • Dedicated, reliable team player and highly adaptive, accommodative with intercultural sensitivity and ability to handle pressure and discourse in a professional setting.

  • Good diplomatic and intercultural skills and a sound awareness and sensitivity to gender issues.

  • Ability to think and act strategically and analytically, grasp new concepts rapidly and prioritize key topics.

  • Proactive, and creative, bringing in own ideas and suggestions.

  • Knowledge in social media content production and management is an advantage.

  • Interested in design and video production with expert knowhow of applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro is an advantage.

  • Strong research and documentation skills.

  • Willingness to travel to other regions in Ethiopia.

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in using Microsoft Office 365 applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Teams, etc.)

  • Very good technical affinity for media contexts including knowledge of a wide range of multimedia, web and digital tools, and content management systems is an advantage.
