Job Description

The Senior Biomedical Engineer, working with and directly reporting to the Deputy Director Commercial Centers, will be responsible for maintaining electrical equipment, providing repair and overhaul services for health facilities equipment and electrical components, as well as installing and managing biomedical and laboratory devices in MSI Ethiopia-owned centers (Maternity and SRH centers) and MSI Ethiopia-supported private health facilities.

The main responsibilities of the Senior Biomedical Engineer include Medical Equipment Specification Development, medical equipment and electrical maintenance, installation of new medical equipment, overhaul services for health facilities equipment and electrical components, management of biomedical and laboratory devices and participating in technical committees.

DUTIES AND TASKS

The Senior Biomedical Engineer will perform the following duties and tasks:

1. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on laboratory and biomedical devices:

·         Develop and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for medical equipment.

·         Conduct regular inspections and maintenance tasks to ensure optimal performance.

·         Clean, lubricate, and calibrate equipment as necessary.

·         Document maintenance activities and keep accurate records.

2. Training staff to use equipment safely:

·         Provide training sessions to healthcare staff on the safe and proper use of medical equipment.

·         Educate users on equipment features, functionality, and safety precautions.

·         Develop training materials and manuals for reference.

3. Troubleshoot and repair office machines:

·         Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with office machines, such as printers, scanners, and copiers.

·         Perform necessary repairs, replace faulty components, and ensure proper functioning.

·         Coordinate with vendors or service providers for complex repairs or maintenance.

 4. Perform electrical maintenance and installation works as per maintenance requests:

·         Respond to maintenance requests related to electrical systems and equipment.

·         Conduct electrical repairs, installations, and upgrades according to established procedures and safety standards.

·         Ensure compliance with electrical codes and regulations.

5. Maintain, support, and supervise emergency generators with the assigned technicians:

·         Inspect and maintain emergency generators in health facilities.

·         Coordinate with technicians to ensure proper functioning and readiness of generators.

·         Provide supervision and guidance to technicians working on generator maintenance.

6. Maintain air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, hand dryers, etc.:

·         Perform maintenance and repairs on HVAC [Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning] systems, refrigeration units, and other related equipment.

·         Conduct regular inspections, clean filters, and ensure efficient operation.

·         Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions, leaks, or other issues.

7. Conduct maintenance and repair of clinical and medical equipment:

·         Perform maintenance tasks and repairs on clinical and medical equipment in healthcare centers.

·         Diagnose equipment malfunctions, replace faulty parts, and ensure proper calibration.

·         Ensure adherence to quality and safety standards.

8. Deliver, assemble, and test medical equipment, train technicians and end-users:

·         Coordinate the delivery of medical equipment to healthcare centers.

·         Assemble and install equipment, ensuring proper setup and functionality.

·         Conduct testing and calibration to ensure accurate performance.

·         Train technicians and end-users on equipment operation and maintenance.

9. Develop medical equipment specifications and participate in technical committee:

·         Collaborate with stakeholders to determine equipment requirements.

·         Research and evaluate available medical equipment options.

·         Specify technical requirements and performance criteria for equipment procurement.

·         Participate in technical committees related to equipment selection and procurement.

10. Writing and documentation of technical evaluation of medical equipment reports:

·         Prepare technical evaluation reports for medical equipment, documenting findings and recommendations.

·         Ensure accuracy and clarity in reporting technical evaluations.

·         Communicate evaluation results to relevant stakeholders.

 11. Support the procurement department for the materials ordered by the departments:

·         Collaborate with the procurement department to identify and order necessary materials and supplies.

·         Provide technical input and guidance in the procurement process.

·         Ensure timely delivery and quality of ordered materials.

12. Closely work with equipment manufacturers and suppliers on technical issues:

·         Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to address technical issues.

·         Communicate malfunctions, deficiencies, and improvement suggestions.

·         Coordinate with suppliers for spare parts procurement and availability.

13. Record time and spare parts used; stock fast-moving spare parts:

·         Maintain detailed records of time spent on maintenance tasks.

·         Track and manage the usage of spare parts.

·         Ensure availability of essential spare parts by managing stock levels.

14. Produce weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports:

·         Generate reports on maintenance activities, equipment performance, and other relevant metrics.

·         Summarize findings, trends, and recommendations in periodic reports.

·         Present reports to management and stakeholders as required.

   15.Collaboration and Teamwork:

·         Biomedical engineering often involves cross-functional collaboration. The Senior Biomedical Engineer may be expected to work closely with other departments, such as IT, facilities, or clinical staff, to address equipment-related issues, implement new technologies, or improve workflow processes.

16. Perform related tasks as required:

·         Undertake additional responsibilities or tasks related to biomedical engineering as assigned.

Job Requirements

A. Qualification Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma and above in Biomedical maintenance.

B. Experience:

·         At least 4 years of experience for BSc holders, or 6 years of experience for Diploma holders in biomedical equipment maintenance or directly related experience (preferably in medical equipment).
