The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) seeks to recruit a Research Officer I who will be a member of the Alliance which is based at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) campus in Addis Ababa.

The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) hereafter Alliance delivers research-based solutions that address the global crises of malnutrition, climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. The Alliance focuses on the nexus of agriculture, nutrition and environment. We work with local, national, and multinational partners across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and with the public and private sectors and civil society. With novel partnerships, the Alliance generates evidence and mainstreams innovations to transform food systems and landscapes so that they sustain the planet, drive prosperity, and nourish people. The Alliance is organized into six key levers: 1) Food environment and consumer behavior - reshaping the food environment and consumer behavior toward healthy and sustainable diets; 2) Multifunctional landscapes - fostering innovation for environmental health and productive landscapes to improve livelihoods; 3) Climate action - mainstreaming climate action in the food system to reduce risks; 4) Biodiversity for food and agriculture - making agricultural and tree diversity available and safeguarding it for the diverse needs of food system actors; 5) Digital inclusion - promoting inclusion in the digital agriculture revolution for equitable benefits; and 6) Crops for nutrition and health - putting nutrition and health at the heart of crop improvement to address the triple burden of malnutrition.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Planning and executing forage project activities in Ethiopia;

  • Engaging, managing, and maintaining collaboration with the stakeholders in the project at different levels e.g., farmers, forage producers, forage seed producers, Research Institutions, relevant Ethiopia entities in the project etc.;

  • Supervise field-based staff in the project and give guidance on expectations that contribute to the project objectives;

  • Write timely, detailed, and informative reports;

  • Attend, contribute and represent the project activities in meetings and forums that may arise.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Seed Science, Plant Breeding, Horticultural Science, Agronomy, Plant Sciences or related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience, preferably have worked with farmers especially livestock producers.

  • Experience on forages e.g., training farmers, seed producers along the forage value chains is important,

Skills:

  • Understand well the livestock sector in Ethiopia and be able to communicate in English and local language as well e.g., Amharic

  • Understand well establishment of forages - on-farm or on-station and able to engage farmers

  • Organize, implement and coordinate various data collection campaigns including biophysical measurements from forage crops, and qualitative data from surveys,

  • Literature review and secondary data collection

  • Data management including cleaning and organizing analyzable datasets

  • Summarizing information from analysis in suitable formats including plots, tables with properly defined captions such that, the plots and tables can stand alone

  • Make presentations related to forages in scientific conferences, workshops and stakeholders’ forums

  • Self-driven person who can work under pressure and with minimal supervision

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 13

Minimum Base salary:                  

  • Birr 37,575 per month (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
