Job Description
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) seeks to recruit a Research Project Coordinator – Landscape Systems who will provide a technical and managerial lead for different projects in the design, planning, and execution of landscape nutrient management, agronomy, soil and water management, agroecology, and crop-livestock resilient practices. He/she has to be a natural resources or agronomy researcher who can work on a wide range of topics, with a particular emphasis on integrated landscape management, agroecology, nutrient management, and crop-livestock resilience.
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is an International organization, one of the 15 CGIAR centers, which conducts agricultural research for rural development in drought-prone of Africa and Asia, headquartered in Patancheru (Hyderabad, Telangana, India) with several regional centers (Bamako (Mali), Nairobi (Kenya)) and country offices, including in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ICRISAT adopts integrated genetic and natural resources management as its overarching research strategy to improve productivity and enhance the resilience of dryland systems. ICRISAT-Ethiopia works with national partners on availing technologies to dry land farmers and agro-pastoralists, enhancing technology utilization, linking farmers to markets, and strengthening the national capacity.
Providing leadership and technical guidance on the design, planning, and execution of landscape nutrient management, agronomy, soil and water management, agroecology, and crop-livestock resilient related projects;
Leading and facilitating national partnerships around soil, agronomy and landscape research and development solutions, particularly co-designing and scaling of agronomic and landscape solutions with national partners and stakeholders;
Developing, coordinating, and contributing to the delivery of quality research outputs and knowledge assets in coordination with the ICRISAT national and global team;
Leading and contributing to project proposal writing and fundraising;
Providing leadership in monitoring progress and ensuring stakeholder expectations are managed for project deliverables;
Supporting the development of databases, decision support tools, and dashboards and other geospatial tools to address key research questions and hypotheses;
Coordinating data analysis and impact measuring approaches targeted to addressing specific challenges;
Managing projects and preparing project technical reports;
Supervising technical research officers and consultants;
Leading and contributing to the writing of peer-reviewed papers, technical notes, and project reports.
Education:
MSc degree or Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Ecology, Soil Science, Soil and Water Management, Sustainable Agriculture or related areas
In-depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field
Experience:
MSc degree with nine years or PhD degree with two years of relevant work experience
Skills:
Proven capacity in research design, implementation, data collection and analysis, data visualization, and scientific writing
Experience with farm and landscape processes, their interactions, and adaptation of practices to the local context
Knowledge of the context of smallholder farming in humid and drylands and extensive knowledge of production systems
Proven track record as a research leader and manager in the fields of landscape management, agronomy, soil fertility management, and soil and water management
Records of peer-reviewed scientific publications
Documented ability to use advanced quantitative analytical tools, including advanced statistics, and preferably R/Python scripts, spatial tools, and Google engine for qualitative data sets
Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, including scientific communication and report writing
Strong ability to lead, prioritize, and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary, and multicultural team
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Grade: HG 16
Monthly Base Salary: Birr 116,866 (Negotiable depending on the salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
