The world Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) seeks to hire a Research Officer I – Seed System to assist in implementation of the USAID-funded project “Best practice guidelines for vegetable seed kit and irrigation interventions to support populations impacted by disaster in need of emergency crop support”  implemented by WorldVeg Ethiopia country office–Addis Ababa.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Collection, preservation, multiplication and promotion of traditional underutilized vegetables;

  • Implement efficient and cost effective on-station and participatory on-farm varietal field trials:

  • Develop experimental data collection protocols for evaluating different vegetables and varieties for better agronomic performance, yield and quality;

  • Implement, monitor, collects and reports data;

  • Conducts preliminary data analysis;

  • Coordinate varietal participatory selection trial with farmers and other value chain stakeholders, and identify important traits;

  • Engage with the national and regional research centers for multilocation adaptation trails;

  • Together with the socio-economist, analyze seed systems in Ethiopia with emphasis on vegetable seed;

  • Provides training and technical guidance to stakeholders, local seed producers, private and public project partners in the vegetable seed production, preservation and good vegetable production technologies;

  • Contributes in the project progress reporting and publication and represent the project on workshops and related events;

  • Performs any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Seed Science, Plant Breeding, Horticultural Science, Agronomy, Plant Sciences or related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience, preferably with an international non-governmental and humanitarian organization.

Skills:

  • Proven track record of providing technical advising services;

  • Proven experience managing on-station and on-farm trial, experimental design, statistical analysis and scientific report writing.

  • Excellent computer skills in MS‐office applications and statistical software (SAS, SPSS, GenStat, etc.);

  • Familiarity with the national vegetable and vegetables seed sectors;

  • Team player with great communication skills in verbal and written English

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners and colleagues in a multi-cultural setting.Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 13

Minimum Base salary:                  

  • Birr 37,575 per month (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funds. WorldVeg offers a multicultural, collegial research environment with competitive salary and excellent benefits in line with ILRI salary applicable for its National Staff.
