Job Description
Position: Post-Doctoral Scientist: Livestock Statistical Geneticist
Key responsibilities:
• In close collaboration with national and international research and development partners: Coordinate and analyze poultry genetics research work, including sampling, data management, analysis, genotyping and sequencing efforts Coordinate field data collection on chicken production and environmental data
• Assess and test innovative approaches to poultry genetic improvement that can deliver substantial improvements to poor farmers in low-input environments and a developing country setting using the outputs of the phenotypic and genetic works
• Support genetic and genomic evaluation systems and develop genetic and genomic tools in collaboration with national and regional breeding programs
• Develop tools and guidelines around topical issues affecting AnGR improvement, utilization, and conservation in Low and Medium Income countries (LMIC)
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings or other public media
• Support team members in training partners in statistical analysis and breed improvement as part of a capacity strengthening of the national and regional breed improvement and statistical programs, especially in breed improvement data analyses, genome sequence analysis, and breeding value predictions
• Establish and maintain professional contacts and interact with national and international officials and experts, other researchers, international organizations, development partners, and stakeholders in livestock genetic improvement.
• Contribute to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by the research team and program
• Contribute to the development of proposals and resource mobilization efforts
• Post location: The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
• Terms of Appointment: This is position is at job level HG 16 and it is open to both national and international applicants. The position is a two (2) year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; medical and other insurances
• A Ph.D. in the field of Livestock Genetics and statistical genetics
• Experience of two to four years of completing PhD
• Familiarity with statistical analysis of genetics data (phenotypes, genotypes information) and link with environmental data
• Strong capabilities in statistic and quantitative analysis, and knowledge in bioinformatics is a plus, with demonstrated experience in programming (Python language, Linux, R, mixed model, genomic selection, and general application of molecular information (genomic tools) in practical animal breeding
• Proficiency in statistical packages, such as SAS, R or GenStat and in livestock database design, management and use.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research results in the form of reports or scientific publications
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, network, prioritize, and deliver under pressure and within set deadlines
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Experience in managing field and data analytics teams
