Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representatives, is to assist Governments to develop policies, programs and projects to achieve food and nutrition security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use the environment and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

In Ethiopia, FAO in collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia prioritizes improving crop and livestock production and productivity, and sustainable natural resource management, while addressing crosscutting themes of resilience, climate change, nutrition and gender. In support of efforts to increase production and productivity of key staple food and commercial crops, FAO distributes crop and vegetable seeds and provides farmers with appropriate training, extension support and farm equipment to enhance crop production. The Organization promotes value chain and agribusiness development for high value agricultural commodities and supports investment planning for Ethiopia’s Agro-Commodity Procurement Zones (ACPZ) through the Hand-in-Hand Initiative. More still, FAO supports improved post-harvest management to reduce post-harvest losses in fruits and crops including maize, wheat and sorghum, through awareness creation and supporting the production and adoption of storage technologies and practices.

To accomplish the above task, FAO Ethiopia has established field offices in different parts of Ethiopia. Hawassa Field Office in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) is one of the field offices. It is equipped with personnel, vehicles and other resources. 

Reporting Lines

Under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Ethiopia (FAOR), the overall supervision of the Business Support Officer and the direct supervision of the Field Office Coordinator for SNNPR in Hawassa and in close collaboration with the Senior Driver, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Technical Focus

Provide transportation/messenger services to Office Staff. He / she ensures the safety, technical soundness and comfort of the vehicle(s) assigned.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Drive official vehicles to transport FAO personnel and other authorized personnel, as authorized;

• Deliver and collect mail, documents, pouch and other communications / items from and to the FAO office, as authorized; go to the post office, airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc. to take and deliver items and communications; keep records as required;

• Maintain assigned vehicle daily - check oil, water, battery, tyres, etc.; perform minor repairs and timely arrange for any other repairs necessary to keep the vehicle in a good running condition at all times; keep the vehicle interior and exterior clean;

• Keep the assigned vehicle secured and safe; park in safe and secured locations at all times;

• Make sure that all necessary tools and equipment (i.e. tools kit, fire extinguisher, first aid medical kit, VHF mobile radio, etc.) are in vehicle, operational and properly safeguarded; 

• Follow all UNDSS guidelines for vehicle tracking and safe driving during field missions; regularly make radio contact with UNDSS, follow travel routes approved on security clearance, etc.;  

• Record movement of assigned vehicle; log trips, daily mileage, fuel issued, etc., in vehicle log book; record transportation / vehicle related expenditures, vehicle servicing, repairs, etc.

• Meet FAO personnel or other authorized personnel at the airport and assist through immigration, customs formalities, hotel check-in, and other local formalities, as may be required;

• Prepare written report of vehicle accidents and follow local procedures for reporting accidents and any other incidents;

• Deliver and collect goods to and from the port of exit/entry and this may involve handling all the formalities for customs clearance.

• Serve as Duty Driver when assigned;

• When needed, assist the FAO office staff in performing simple clerical duties such as making and answering telephone calls, making photocopies, etc. 

• Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements    

• Candidate should be a nationals of Ethiopia;

• Completed Secondary Education (High School Diploma or Equivalent). 

• Be in Possession of valid 3rd grade driver’s license.

• Three (3) years of work experience as a driver; experience in a UN or international organization is an advantage. Having a flawless, safe driving record is an asset.

• Good knowledge of the local language(s). Fair knowledge of the FAO official language used at the duty station (English) is required.
