Background

Working under direct administrative supervision of the Head of Sub-Office in Dire Dawa and technical supervision of the National Programme Officer – Peace Building, the Durable Solutions Assistant will be responsible to assist the day-to-day implementation and coordination, networking and information sharing activities of the durable solution initiatives in duty station in close collaboration with IOM staff members, Durable Solution Working Group (DSWG) members, project partners and local authorities. She/he will be tasked to prepare activity plans, organize, and coordinate regular meetings, follow up on action points, and collect and prepare implementation progresses of planned activities. The candidate will execute her/his duties in close coordination and collaboration with different stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team in an ever changing and diverse environment. S/he needs to be solution orientated, hands-on and a good motivator and communicator with people.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  •  Support the coordination of the Durable Solution Working Group (DSWG) regular and ad-hoc meetings in close collaboration with the regional Disaster Risk Management Bureau, (DRMB)

  • Support and facilitate timely information sharing among the DSWG members through meetings, follow up and assistance.

  • In close coordination and consultation with DRMB, prepare agendas, set schedules, facilitate participation of DSWG members on a regular basis, convene meetings and follow up on implementation of action points.

  • Identify and suggest potential members, supporters and contributors to the DSWG and suggest mechanisms for improved participation

  • Join and support assessments, intention surveys and information gathering that are relevant to supporting the durable solutions for the IDPs in the region.

  • Provide periodic information updates and reports on progresses, challenges, and lessons on the durable solutions initiative in the region to the head of sub-office and the technical supervisors.

  • Document good practices and experiences and provide inputs on project information and documentation (including human interest stories, photos, articles, etc); maintain up to date records of information of all project beneficiaries for follow ups and reporting.

  • Map and gather data to enhance the profiling of the DSWG members in relation to activities that may be linked with the DS initiatives.

  • Prepare required project data to inform and update supervisors in the field level inter agency coordination meetings as required/instructed.

  • Provide information and facilitate meetings and field visits to the Durable Solution support team including the durable solutions consultant.

  • Assist in exploring opportunities and relevant activities in furthering and strengthening the durable solutions initiatives to better support IDPs in a protracted internal displacement situation in the region.

  • Perform other related duties as may be required

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

·         University degree in Law, Political Science and International Relations, Conflict Resolutions, Disaster Risk Management, Early Recovery or any related Social Science fields.

Experience

•       Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in post crisis, recovery and community stabilization areas- preferably in the field of durable solution assistance to internally displaced persons;

•       Experience related to coordination, partnership, networking and advocacy strategies and practices.

•       Rich knowledge and experience in the patterns, trends and drivers of internal displacement in the Somali region is advantageous 

Skills:

·         Proven ability to build synergies with government counterparts, relevant humanitarian partners and coordination mechanisms

·         Ability to work under minimal supervision with strong coordination skills strategies, encroaches and guidelines

Languages

·         Fluency in English and Amharic is required.

·         Working knowledge Afan Oromo/Somali languages is an advantage.
