About the Country Program in Ethiopia

Action Against Hunger has been operational in Ethiopia since 1984 responding to both chronic and acute needs through a multi-sectoral strategy where nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support activities are integrated to have a meaningful impact on people’s resilience. Action Against Hunger currently operates in 5 different regions (Oromia, Somali, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz, and Gambella) with a portfolio of 20m USD/year of emergency, resilience building, research, and innovation programs. We have a country team of around 600 staff in 17 regional and satellite offices. Our main donors in Ethiopia in 2020/2021 are BHA, ECHO, Europaid, UNHCR, UNICEF, GFFO, BPRM, SIDA, EHF, WFP, CIAA, and others. 

I.  Summary of position

 To supervise the management of Mekelle drug store and provide support to the PMs.

The Pharmacist role’s purpose, engagement and delivery is:

Purpose (The substantive focus of the job encompassing scope, depth and difficulty of work both conceptual and applied)

Objective 1: Establishing and/or updating regularly drugs suppliers data base

  •  To assess the national market of drugs and maintain the list of validated suppliers and available drugs

  • To ensure that all

Objective 2: Follow up the drug supplies for each project according to ACF procedure, MOH and donors’ rules (depending on each donor)

  • To ensure that drugs PRs raised at the beginning of the project and follow the delivery of drugs at the required time

  • Technically validate the drugs and provide necessary technical advice for the requester

  • Validate PRs

  • Technically validate assessment table for all drugs PR and ensure technically fit drugs selected

Engagement: (The focus of interaction both internally and externally needed to deliver a service seek collaboration and build effective partnerships)

Objective 3: Assist NUT PMs on the management of drugs

  •  Training on use of pharmacy storage procedures (Bin card, stock cards, etc.)

  • Correct estimation of the drugs need

  • Store management per expiry date

  • Set up of alert when stock level decreases

  • Follow up monthly consumptions and reporting

  • Follow up set up of the pharmacy and storage conditions

Delivery: (The focus on the execution of the work and the role on the team for supporting business/operational functions in terms of timeliness and quality)

Objective 4: participate in donor proposal writing with the estimation of drugs needs and budget calculations.

  • Provide support to PMs in estimating of the drugs need

  • Together with PMs collect list of medical items needed by target health centres

Objective 5: Participate, upon request, in the training of the basic staff in charge of the management of  medical equipment and medicine

  •  Provide training for the staffs on pharmacy management

IV.   Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

V.   Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

  •   The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.

While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases. 

VI.  Required Qualifications and Professional Experience 

  • BSC in Pharmacy with more than Two (2) years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical and nutrition commodities management in humanitarian and development programs.

  • BSC in Pharmacy with more than Two (2) years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical and nutrition commodities management in humanitarian and development programs.

II. Required Skills & Competencies

  • Organization and rigors

  • Very good knowledge of Ethiopian drug supply regulations for NGO (for local supplies and import)

  • Experience in managing drug stores

  • Experience in delivering training on drug management

  • Good capacity of negotiation with the various stakeholders.

  • Very good command of excel and word

  • Fluent in English
