Roles and Responsibilities
FCDO Ethiopia is a large, dynamic and high-performing office - implementing the UK’s largest aid programme. Ethiopia has delivered remarkable development results over the last 25 years. FCDO partners with the Government, multilateral partners and local organisations across a range of sectors.
This role sits within the Resilience and Humanitarian Team (RHT). RHT leads UK Aid’s efforts to build the resilience of the poorest and most vulnerable in Ethiopia through strengthening national systems, promoting climate adaptation, and humanitarian reform. We also lead the UK’s response to humanitarian emergencies in Ethiopia.
This is an exciting and challenging time to join our team. You will work at the heart of the UK’s response to one of the most complex humanitarian situations in the world. The UN estimate that Ethiopia will have more people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2023 than any other country in the world. You will be responsible for maintaining assessments and analysis of humanitarian needs and risks in Ethiopia, supporting the team to monitor our programmes in the field, and take responsibility for specific humanitarian themes (depending on your interests and experience).
You will be managed by the British Embassy’s Senior Humanitarian Advisor, and work closely with humanitarian advisors, programme management staff, and other experts from British Embassy (including human development, conflict and governance specialists). You will be expected to support humanitarian reporting and analysis to the leadership of the British Embassy Addis Ababa, FCDO HQ in the UK, as well as visiting Ministers and senior officials. You will need to maintain an effective external network within the humanitarian community in Ethiopia.
This is an ideal position for someone who would like to deepen their experience in the humanitarian sector and gain an understanding of working for a donor.
Provide regular reporting and analysis of humanitarian needs and risks in Ethiopia. This will include producing regular situation reports, thematic and regional briefs (as required), and leading scenario planning exercises for the team.
Lead planning and management of field visits to FCDO funded programmes and areas of humanitarian concern in Ethiopia. Participate in some of these field visits (at least 10 days per year) to monitor programmes and inform situation assessments
Maintain an effective network within the Ethiopian humanitarian community. Specific responsibility for relationships with humanitarian information management specialists, logistics cluster, humanitarian security specialists, and Ethiopian NGOs.
Support humanitarian policy development and engagement with Government, humanitarian agencies and other partners.
Depending on the successful candidate’s experience and interests, there will also be an opportunity to lead on specific thematic areas within the team.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Experience of working on humanitarian issues (e.g. for government, international or national humanitarian organization's, and/or donors).
Excellent analytical and data analysis skills and good experience presenting information in clear information products.
A proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently, verbally and in writing.
Strong understanding of Ethiopian humanitarian policies and architecture.
Excellent interpersonal and team working skills, with an ability to work flexibly and adapt to emerging issues.
