Job Description

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant position the details of which are mentioned bellow.

About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131  District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee  and 5871 Kebele Red Cross  committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Key performance areas

  • Supports the DSG in Planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling the program development and management activities of the NS,

  • Provide advice to the DSG to support program implementation and assist the DSG in his/her supervision tasks;

  • Participates in the development of system, policies, procedures standards in program areas and supports it’s the implementation of same upon approval;

  • Assists the DSG in program formulation and development of program plans based on Vulnerability Capacity Assessment and Emergency Need Assessment; 

  • Advises and assists the DSG in leading the overall communication and coordination with Movement and Non-movement partners, and works for the engagement of the NS with strategic partners;

  • Advise the DSG on the prioritization for intervention of the HQ and branches in accordance with the policies and procedures in place for programmatic issues;

  • Assists the SG in the preparation of reports and other statements on Program areas;

  • Work closely with the project design and monitoring unit to ensure that every program and projects addresses the existing programmatic and operational needs of the Society; work closely with other departments in the DSG, regional branches, PNSs and other stakeholders in the overall implementation of programs and projects;

  • Facilitates the coordination of different work units in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness;

  • Work closely with other departments and branches to ensure they are able to meet partner/donor compliance requirements; Contribute to the work units of the program areas on-going understanding of the program context and specific trends and issues related to program/ project implementation issues.

  • Participating, on behalf of the DSG, in relevant national fora and representing the ERCS system on programmatic issues where necessary; Support the coordination of program-level research and evaluation projects among work units at HQ and branch level;

  • Manage relationships, and coordinate work with different work units with in the DSG; Contribute to the design and implementation of local and national level advocacy strategies on ERCS Programmatic priorities and activities;

  • Communicate progress, challenges, and lessons learned related to program deliverables with work units under DSG on a regular basis. 

Reporting to : -  Deputy Secretary General (DSG)

Terms of employment:-Contract for one year with possibility of extension based on high level of performance

Job Requirements

Qualification Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree/First Degree in Development Studies, Program Development, Disaster Risk Management, Management, Social Work/ Social Anthropology, Public Health

  • 8/10 years of work experience out of which 4/6 years on senior expert/advisory position.
