Job Description

The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) works to promote peaceful, just and inclusive politics worldwide. Our approach across all our programmes is unique and characterized by dialogue: we bring politicians from across the political spectrum together.  We work on their knowledge and competences, and empower them to cooperate in a constructive and accommodative manner on issues that affect them, their country and the broader region. 

NIMD has been active in Ethiopia since 2016, providing support to the dialogue process and legislative reforms. During this time, NIMD has built strategic relations and trust with the main democratic institutions (House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR), National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), and key political actors, which will be essential for the successful execution of this action.  At the moment, NIMD implements projects funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, USAID/ESP, FCDO, and the European Union (EU). 

Accountant

The Accountant will be responsible for the financial administration of the program. (S)he ensures all accounting is done in in compliance with relevant contractual/statutory/procedural requirements. (S)he will ensure budgeting and accountability for all funds is done in a timely and qualitative manner, and will contribute to project planning/reporting, and basic translation. 

This position is a full-time position based in Addis Ababa for one year with a possibility of extension based on good performance. The accountant reports to the Finance and Support Manager. 

 Responsibilities

  • Process payments including petty cash according to the procedures,

  • Perform advance payment and settlement for office and projects,

  • Maintain contract with the bank regarding financial transactions,

  • Prepare bank reconciliation statements for office bank accounts,

  • Contribute to implementation of effective financial systems and procedures,

  • Check and of expenditures and supporting documents for every project and make sure they are in line with approved budget,

  • Entry of financial data in the accounting system,

  • Provide logistical support to activities,

  • Contribute to the budgeting process. Assist with budget adjustments and allocations,

  • Present input for budgets and proposals according to HQ and donor requirements,

  • Prepare for internal and external audit processes; prepare and file support documents,

  • Ensure financial reports and submitted to the Finance and Support Manager on agreed time and according to required format,

  • Perform any other task assigned to her/him

Assignment conditions

The full-time position is for one year period, including a probation period, with the possibility of extension based on a good performance. NIMD offers competitive salary and benefits. The position is available immediately.

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone with the following qualification, skills and experience

Relevant education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from recognized university,

Work experience:

  • minimum of 4 years relevant experience of which at least 2 years in an International NGO,

  • Pro-active and able to work independently as well as in cooperation with others,

  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office including Work, Excel, Power Point and Outlook

  • Good level of oral and written English,

  • Willingness to travel to project areas for providing payments,

  • Knowledge of QuickBooks Accounting Software
