Job Description

Reporting to the project area coordinator and will be responsible for the planning, executing jobs of the project to be implemented in the two Woredas in East Bale Zone stationing at Ginir town and ensure that the project is completed in a timely fashion, within budget and in line with commitment in the donor contract. 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Apiculture expert will conduct the mapping and selection of better experienced lead beekeepers (LBKs) in potential beekeeping kebeles of the two target districts.

  • He/she is responsible to promote improved beekeeping technical outreach, and marketing services.

  • Train and mentor beekeepers and organize, beekeeping Self-help groups/ producer group (PG) and Business Economic and Marketing Association (BEMA) in collaboration with pertinent government offices.

  • Conduct assessment of labor market related to youth employability particularly girls and business economic marketing related to BEMA

  • Provide SHG business planning training in collaboration with recruited resource person.

  • Responsible for producing proceedings of trainings related to apiculture and livestock management

  • Prepare training packages that are envisaged for the LBKs which include improved beekeeping techniques and business/entrepreneurship skills including facilitation skills and facilitate trainings in collaboration with relevant institutions

  • Conduct awareness raising workshops on protection of indigenous floral trees in collaboration pertinent local authorities and experts in the matter

  • Work closely with Woreda apiculture experts and livestock extension workers who are trained together with the LBKs in the field for technical back-stopping services.

  • Facilitate the LBKs to obtain a certificate from the respective woreda apiculture offices so that the LBKs will be officially recognized as trainers in improved beekeeping techniques to monitor and know the status of the target beneficiaries

  • Facilitate training of livestock extension workers in collaboration with resource person recruited for high level quality training ensured.

  • Produce weekly updates and monthly progress reports and other reports, Document and share lessons learned and success stories in relation to objectively verifiable indicators.

  • Expected to conduct seasonal mentoring, on job trainings, organize experience sharing among beekeeping beneficiaries during dearth period, hive preparation colony transfer and harvesting periods

  • Organize experience sharing visit for better learning opportunities that is envisaged as result of improved beekeeping intervention

Monitoring

  • Ensure that cross cutting issues such as gender, protection and HIV are appropriately addressed

  • Carry out regular monitoring, data collection and analyses of activities to guide arc mapping integration NDVI (Normailzed Difference Vegetation Index) activities

  • In collaboration with Woreda DRM offices, coordinate and monitor early warning system improvement and technology-based approach.

  • Prepare checklists for monitoring implementation of the project and develop monitoring formats as per the engagement

  • Supervise activities with relevant local partners and report to the partners and the area coordinator

  • Collaborate with the MEAL Department to conduct ongoing monitoring and feedback/accountability of response to ensure actions are taken timely and appropriate.

  • Prepare monitoring schedules and pre- requisites of sites for visitor in collaboration with focal persons of local partners.

  • Promote a culture of respect, transparency, and accountability in the due course of project activity implementation 

  • Identify best practices of the project for documentation and dissemination and replication by others, and reflection process to measure achievement and facilitate learning within program area

Child Safeguarding:

  • Responsible to take part in awareness raising sessions and capacity building trainings in relation to Child Safeguarding to prevent and protect children and young people from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination

  • Support children and young people to make them understand the CS risks and protection mechanisms 

  • Responsible to report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager   

Job Requirements

Education/ Qualification

  • Msc/Bsc Degree in Disaster risk management, Natural resource management, Apiculture management and related disciplines, with a minimum of 2 years for MSc and 4 years for BSc

Essential knowledge and Experience

  • Proven experience on participatory community development/empowerment and multi sectorial grassroots community development activities directly related to agriculture marketing

  • Strong programming and implementation skills,

  • Proven community facilitation, organization and mobilization skills,

  • Willingness and commitment to frequently travel to and work in remote areas,

  • Ability and experience in linkage with stakeholders, service providers and private companies and influencing them towards the objectives of the project

  • Strong ability to communicate concisely and with impact in English.

  • Excellent command of local (Afaan Oromo) languages and good communication skills, including both written and verbal.

  • Willingness and commitment to deployment in remote areas
