Job Description

Job Purpose:

  • The driver will be responsible for providing logistical support in transporting Concern staff and visitors when required.  The driver is responsible for maintenance of the vehicle making sure that it is in good condition, at all times. The driver is responsible for undertaking daily vehicle checks, reporting any immediate difficulties with the vehicles, reporting accidents and arranging for servicing.  The driver will also provide logistical support whenever called.

Main duties & Responsibilities:

Driving:

  • Ensure movements are carried out as agreed with the transport officer.

  • Ensure Concern vehicle is in good condition.

  • Only carry authorized personnel, delivery and collection of mail, goods in accordance to planning or directives of the transport officer. 

  • Ensure that the passengers adhere to the traffic rules and regulations.  

  • Respect Concern and government road speed limits.

  • Propel the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner and in accordance with Ethiopian traffic regulations and the Concern transport policy and procedures.

  • Responsible for the vehicle assigned to you and the security of the people and merchandise/goods in vehicle.

  • Wear seat belt and ensure that all passengers wear seatbelt before each journey starts.

  • Ensure no phone use while driving and respecting safety distances between vehicles at all times.

  • Ensure that there is no smoking in a Concern Vehicle.

  • At the end of the working day, ensure that the vehicle has been locked (doors, boot, windows), and always parked in a safe location.

  • Leave the vehicle keys with staff member in charge at the end of the working day.

Transport of Merchandise and People:

  • Drive Concern employees and/or equipment to their destinations as requested in a safe, courteous, and law-abiding manner.

  • Assist passengers with loading/offloading of goods into/out of vehicles.

  • Ensure the proper loading and unloading of the vehicle, regarding the maximum load, good distribution and securing of the load.

  • Ensure that the people who are travelling in the vehicle have their papers in order. When transporting non- Concern people, ensure that they sign the document of no liability form (waiver).  This must be authorized in advance of the journey.

  • Ensure that the vehicle's documents (insurance etc...) are up to date and are in the vehicle.

  •  Always have renewed driving license and ID with you in the vehicle.

Vehicle maintenance/service:

  • Keep the vehicle clean: ensure that the vehicle is washed at least once a week with water and a non-corrosive detergent.

  • Ensure  that the daily and weekly vehicle checks are conducted and all forms completed and filed as per Concerns procedures

  • Complete daily vehicle activity control charge sheet and all vehicle logbook information correctly.

  • Ensure that the authorized travelers sign the logbook for the journey that they have travelled. 

  • Summarize and submit documents at the end of the month to the Transport and Logistics Officer.

  • Be present when the work/repairs are being carried out on the vehicle, and take note of the work being done.  

  • Ensure that the fuel received, kilometers covered, services information are recorded in the vehicle log book.

  • Monitor the maintenance and repair status of the vehicle.  Ensure that maintenance and repairs

  • Fill the vehicle with fuel to full capacity each Friday.

  • Ensure that the board/log book, the tools, the spare parts, a complete emergency kit and the spare wheel are inside the vehicle before every movement.

Communication/Reports:

  • Immediately inform the Transport Officer if in doubt of the mechanical state of the vehicle.

  • Inform Transport officer immediately if any service or maintenance is required on the vehicle

  • Report any accidents immediately to the office and nearest police station.

  • Report on a monthly basis the mileage, fuel consumption and maintenance carried out on the vehicle to the Transport Officer.

  • Know the communication procedures and the functions of the radio and stand in as the mobile radio operator for the vehicle.

  • Ensure that communication equipment is/are working before departure

  • Undertake other related duties as may reasonably be assigned to you by the supervisor or line manager.

  • work with relevant colleagues  to ensure that information about CRM, safeguarding and expected staff behaviour is disseminated among programme participants and communities.

Job Requirements

Person specification:

Essential

  • Trained/qualified driver with a valid license to drive a vehicle is a MUST.

  • Clean full driving license at least third grade valid driving license

  • Over three years’ driving experience, preferably for an NGO

  • 12th grade completed

  •  Intermediate knowledge of radio communication and radio etiquette

  •  Intermediate knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair

  • Must have a good working knowledge of English in oral and writing

  • Able to demonstrate road safety awareness and excellent driving skills

  • Knowledge of Addis and surrounding areas, the road network, distances, travel times, road conditions etc.

Desirable

  • Diploma in  Basic Mechanics
