Job Description

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the USAU Economic Specialist vacant position. 

VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT NUMBER:  Addis-2022-021(RA)

Basic Function of Position:

Serves in the Political/Economic section. Prepare factual and analytical reports on economic-related African Union (AU) policies and activities to advance U.S. priorities with the African Union and its 55 member states.  Develop and maintain contacts at the AU, UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), other diplomatic missions, companies, and Pan-African organizations on economic issues; assist embassy officers with meetings, visits, and trips; and serve as backup to Political Assistant. General supervision by U.S. Economic Officer.  Has no supervisory responsibility.

WORK HOURS: Full-time (40 hours/week)

SALARY

  • Ordinarily Resident (OR): Position Grade: FSN-10 (18,740.00 USD per year)

  • Not Ordinarily Resident: FP-05

  • *Final grade/step for NORs will be determined by Washington.

Duration of Appointment: Indefinite subject to successful completion of probationary period.   

NOTE: For ordinarily resident employees, salary will be paid in local currency using the established exchange rate.

Job Requirements

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business, or Finance required

Required Experience

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis at a think tank, international organization, NGO, corporation, or investment firm (including but not limited to banking) is required.

Language Requirement

  • English level 4 (fluent) reading/writing/speaking is required. (This may be tested).

  • Arabic, French, Portuguese, Spanish or Kiswahili or any other African language level 3 (good working knowledge) reading/writing/speaking is required. (This may be tested).

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to develop and maintain a range of working and senior level contacts. Ability to carry out complex research projects and prepare factual and analytical reports on economic issues. Ability to assess the impact of significant events or policy changes on the African Union and African economies. Basic keyboarding skills required. Position requires numerical skills for grant management and production of regular statistical reports. Working knowledge of computer applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. (These may be tested).
