In Ethiopia, Plan has more than 25 years of experience in implementing its programme. Currently PIE mainly operates in seven geographical areas; Amhara, Oromia, SNNPR, Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, Afar, and Addis Ababa City Administration on different projects funded by different donors including sponsorship.

Plan International Ethiopia's main purpose is to seek Gender Justice for Girls, Adolescent Girls, and Young Women. We aim to help create an enabling environment where girls, adolescent girls, and young women are safe, valued, equally cared for, and have equal opportunities. PIE will contribute to the global strategy by aiming to reach directly 2.1 million Girls, Adolescent Girls and Young Women over the period of the strategy 2020-2024 and to reach an additional 6.3 million beneficiaries through its interventions.

The position holder will be responsible to primarily support the implementation of Healthy Village (Gender Transformative WASH – Nutrition) programme funded by EKN with especial focus and roles on community facilitations, community mobilization, beneficiary selections for different WASH and Nutrition/food security interventions including training's and community conversations, facilitate meaningful participation of women, girls, people with disabilities and the community at every steps of the project planning, implementation, community conversations, peer to peer discussions, supervising child growth monitoring, and monitoring processes and strengthening/ capacitating of WASH and Nutrition service providers (WASHCOs, Sanitary products, and Nutrition marketing groups and producers) which will be implemented in Shebel-Berenta District of Amhara Program Area (APA). In doing so s/he will provide facilitation support and communications to the kebele/ community level WASH and nutrition team and experts, health extension workers, village level health promotors, WASH service providers (WASHCOs, water care takers), communities, school clubs, and private sectors. for the implementation of an integrated and sustainable WASH and nutrition program interventions that aims to reach an improved WASH and nutrition services for all in the target communities through the application of right based, SBCC, business model, gender transformation and social inclusion. S/he will also facilitate project activities at community level including facilities and services are quality, sustainable, climate resilient, inclusive efficient and effective. He/she fulfills this responsibility through the organization and management of the sector by focusing mainly on the Healthy Village (Gender Transformative WASH -Nutrition) Program key elements namely (1) Food and Nutrition Security, (2) Hygiene and Sanitation (3) Water and Multi use system ( MUS) (4.) Entrepreneurship and access to finance. The job holder will also focus on learning and knowledge development as it is an integral part of the programme.

ACCOUNTABILITIES and MAIN WORK ACTIVITIES

Program Activities Implementation;

  • Facilitate community mobilizations, SBCC and Community conversation activities of Healthy Village (Gender Transformative WASH) – Nutrition) program at community and school level.
  • Facilitate the program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project target community level.
  • Organize different training, workshop and meeting at community and school level.
  • Follow-up of child growth monitoring work.
  • Support evidence (research) and knowledge management work by preparing program’s best practices, good lessons, documentation and sharing. It also including preparing case stories, high quality photo and videos.
  • Monitoring the establishment of VESA groups, and provide technical support for them on the operation and management.
  • Participate in different assessments and surveys which will be conducted at community, health institutions and school level in partnership with stakeholders and consultants.
  • Monitor food security/nutrition activities which includes vegetables production around homesteads using irrigation.
  • Ensure the implementation of multi-use system of water for demestiv use, and to produce vegetables, poultry, and ruminants (sheep and goats). This includes, new construction, repurposing and maintenance of schemes.
  • Mobilize communities, Kebele WASH team, WASHCOs, Sanitation marketing producer groups, school WASH clubs, (girls, boys, men and women and influential religious, CBOs, Iddir leaders to promote behavioral change and demand creation on improved latrine, hand washing and safe water use practices positive gender norms and implement positive gender practices.
  • Promote and create market link between households/ individuals and producer groups and shops to buy san plate, locally produced sanitary pads, soaps, nutrition products (mitin), eggs, etc. for household latrine, hand washing and MHM purposes.
  • Provide regular technical support to kebele WASH team at community level.
  • Support and follow up WASHCOs, water caretakers, nutritious food (mitin) producers, and sanitation marketing groups to properly run and manage their businesses in providing the necessary WASH and nutrition services at community and household/ individual level.
  • Follow up and support school WASH clubs planning and management of WASH and nutrition services in the school compound (MHM practices, keep the school environment ODF, proper use of latrines, hand washing practices, keep class rooms clean, safe use of water supply, school gardening etc.)
  • Facilitate community mobilizations to create ODF environment at kebele level 
  • Support and facilitate joint planning, implementation and monitoring of the project with relevant government stakeholders.
  • Ensure gender transformation which include active participation of women, girls and people with disabilities in the leadership roles during the project implementation processes. Ensure GWNMT is used for gender related trainings and implementing gender related activities.
  • Facilitate user selection and follow up material /livestock/technology distribution at community and school level which include hand tools, improved seed, irrigation technologies, poultry and goat/sheep production/fattening.
  • Facilitate and arrange various field visit schedules and review meetings at community and school level
  • Collect monitoring data and reports regularly from village level committees, WASHCOs, care takers, sanitation groups/health promoters, school WASH clubs, households and beneficiaries as appropriate to be used for reporting, compile case stories, and any other documentation purposes
  • Organize experience sharing events among community groups, CBO leaders, producers, WASHCOs, water care takers school WASH clubs, school garden clubs etc.
  • Report training /workshop activity as well as distribution of materials timely.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports properly and timely
  • Perform other duties as requested by the immediate supervisor

Safeguarding Children and Young People (Safeguarding) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI)

  • Understands and puts into practice the responsibilities under Safeguarding and GEI policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), ensuring that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
  • Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion are fully embedded in day to day work.
  • Ensures that Plan Ethiopia contributes to Plan International’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and GEI, including making sure that relevant reporting and data are submitted.

Job Requirements

Qualifications/ experience essential:

  • Diploma, or Technical and Vocational Training School (10 + 3) graduate in Community Development studies, Social work, WASH and SBCC studies and related with 5 years of experience. Or first degree in the above fields or equivalent with two-year experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years extensive experience in development work at grassroots level. This includes working in water development, hygiene and sanitation, agriculture and nutrition disciplines.
  • Experience working in international NGOs is an advantage.
  • Computer literacy in Excel and Word.
  • Knowledge of working areas.

Languages required

  • Fluency in English and Amharic language is essential
