The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a seeks to recruit a Communications and Knowledge Management Officer III to support communication activities for the AICCRA Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) and AICCRA-Ethiopia Clusters, including designing communication strategies for the country and regional cluster and disseminating a range of knowledge products.

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Key Responsibilities:

Specific activities and tasks include:

  • Supporting and where applicable leading the production of AICCRA ESA and AICCRA Ethiopia cluster publications, including print, web materials through articles, reports, policy briefs, multimedia products, posters, information packets, working papers, info notes, and other programs documentation;
  • Editing, proof-reading, copy-editing and summarizing program documents, and writing articles (blogs, Op-eds) about program work;
  • Developing other program materials, such as summaries of research projects, updates of research progress, staff profiles, feature articles, and success stories;
  • Maintaining AICCRA-ESA and AICCRA-Ethiopia publication inventory on CGspace and keeping the publication's archives regularly updated;
  • Supporting the provision of compelling and actionable policy recommendations to national audiences in AICCRA focus countries and a global audience, including COP events
  • Facilitating and documenting program meetings and workshops and managing the uploading of all relevant materials on the relevant platforms;
  • Uploading program materials on social media sites – Twitter, Facebook to drive traffic to the website and keep track of the online footprint and media mentions of AICCRA ESA and AICCRA-Ethiopia;
  • Engaging the communication teams of AICCRA-ESA and AICCRA-Ethiopia national, regional, and continental partners, and co-developing joint products;
  • Engaging key partners in media to collaborate and disseminate the knowledge produced and shared by AICCRA country and regional clusters;
  • Supporting and where applicable leading communication and knowledge management for other major bilateral multi-country regional projects including CRAFT, LSC, etc.
  • Lead in planning, organizing, and implementing regional narratives relevant to AICCRA-Ethiopia and AICCRA East and Southern Africa and its core and spillover Eastern and Southern African countries;
  • Leading the coordination of AICCRA ESA core country-level clusters related to joining initiatives and projects;
  • As a lead AICCRA Regional (Eastern and Southern Africa) and AICCRA-Ethiopia Country Clusters communications specialist - work with the lead AICCRA Global, and other AICCRA regional and AICCRA core countries experts and teams as part of the broader Communications and Knowledge Management cohort representing the interests of AICCRA ESA and AICCRA Ethiopia;

Final Products

Expected deliverables:

  • A range of knowledge outputs finalized and disseminated, including briefs, working papers, journal articles, Info notes, and blogs;
  • AICCRA Ethiopia and ESA publications uploaded and archived on CGSpace, publications database updated (real-time), and active social media engagement maintained.

Job Requirements

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Development Communications or related field of specialization;
  • Seven years of relevant experience
  • A solid background in agricultural, environmental, climate science, or related fields is an added advantage;
  • Experience in supporting communications and media relations in agricultural, environmental, and climate change research for development or working experience in international development organizations engaged in agriculture, food security, and climate change is an added advantage;
  • Ability to read and synthesize complex technical information to produce clear and well-written summaries;
  • Ability to present and package scientific information into various formats to suit specialist and non-specialist audiences;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office packages, knowledge of and skills in desktop publishing, HTML, photography, photo, and video editing;
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken; and
  • Demonstrated ability to take an initiative, work independently, and pay attention to detail.
  • Broad / specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Grade: HG 15

Minimum Base Salary:  

  • Birr 54,044 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for one year and nine months with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
