Job Description

Role and responsibilities

The purpose of the Education Coordinator position is to implement delegated education project portfolio within Benishangul Gumuz and neighboring Amhara and Oromia regions, managing the day-to-day activities of Education staff to ensure proper delivery, high quality results and compliance to applicable laws, standards, practices, policies and procedures with close collaboration with Programme Manager and Education Specialist. The following is a brief description of the role.

Generic responsibilities

  1. Line management of education project field staff
  2. Adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures and awareness of NRC global and regional strategies
  3. Contribute to education strategy development, project proposals and provide input on needs and gaps, considering where appropriate the role of cash-based interventions and market-based programmes
  4. Manage and implement delegated portfolio of education projects (activities, budget and project documentation) as delegated from PM in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements, and ensure high technical quality
  5. Provide regular progress reports to Area Programme Manager (APM) and AM as required
  6. Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection, explore and asses new and better ways to assist
  7. Promote and share ideas for improvement and necessary changes in the activities
  8. Ensure capacity building of project staff and transfer key skills
  9. Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders
  10. Promote the rights of refugees, IDPs and returnees in line with the advocacy strategy 

Specific responsibilities

  • Ensure that NRC’s related activities are implemented within NRC’s protection mainstreaming guidelines and report any breaches/concerns to the line manager and/or focal point for proper action, and protection related cases are referred to the concerned focal point
  • Lead the need assessments to identify gaps and opportunities and submit comprehensive assessment report to the APM and Education Specialist
  • Oversee the implementation of education activities and work closely with the education team to monitor quality and progress to ensure activities are implemented in accordance with overall project objectives and as per NRC standards (EIE, youth education and training programmes)
  • Provide support to formal education system and work with partners as appropriate, to address barriers to enrolment, attendance, and performance, and ensure children and adolescents are provided with high-quality, relevant education
  • Responsible for filing of education documents according to guidelines or the ET filing tree and according to the Securing Supporting Documents policy
  • Manage the delegated project budgets, including the preparation, monitoring and updating of budgets, spending plans, and BVAs.
  • Responsible to ensure GORS data for education is reported accurately on a monthly basis
  • Ensure the monitoring and evaluation plan is undertaken in a timely and effective manner in coordination with M&E unit
  • Responsible for recruitment of education staff and manage performance (support the team in setting performance objectives and development plans), and provide constructive feedback on a regular basis
  • Ensure the education database is updated with all beneficiaries’ information and validate consistency of data sets between the education database and NRC’s reporting system,
  • Work closely with education authorities, participate, represent NRC and contribute to the regional education cluster and task force meetings

Job Requirements

Generic professional competencies for this position:

  • Experience from education project implementation or project management in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Master's or Bachelor's Degree in Educational planning and management/education leadership, Pedagogy and Social Sciences
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal

 Context related skills, knowledge and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):

  • Knowledge of the Ethiopian Education system and Benishangul Gumuz regional education context
  • Education project management experience from a refugee, IDP and returnee setup (especially EiE and technical vocational training)
  • Experience in implementing INEE standards, inclusive education and other core humanitarian standards
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience of working with government authorities and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of the humanitarian context in Benishangul Gumuz, and fluency in
  • Ability to priorities responsibilities, carry out multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
