The Pharo Foundation (the ‘’Foundation”) is a privately funded entrepreneurial organization that runs philanthropic programmes as well as a for-profit arm, Pharo Ventures. The Vision of the Foundation is an economically vibrant and inclusive Africa. The Mission is to achieve the Vision by investing in the human and physical capital of Africa, with a strong focus on job creation.

Established in 2011 as a UK based non-profit, the Foundation has since made a strategic shift to directly design and implement its own programmes to ensure greater engagement with communities, better results, and increased accountability. The Foundation has carried out numerous projects in East Africa, with a focus on Ethiopia and Somaliland, and is now expanding operations in Rwanda and Kenya. The key strategic pillars for the philanthropic side of the Foundation are education, health, water, and agriculture. At the end of 2019, the Foundation also started its Pharo Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self-sustaining businesses, which focus on job and economic value creation. 

Pharo Primary School Assosa, in Benishangul Gumuz Regional State was established in 2020 by The Pharo Foundation with an aim of increasing access to quality education service in Assosa and to be a center of excellence in the region. Currently, the school is providing quality education for over 370 students at primary level (1-8). In the near future, we plan to open a KG and a secondary school within our own campus.      

Our school mainly follows the regional and national curriculum that is supplemented in various ways including reading materials, creative technology-based learning, education technology solutions (we have well-structured instructional classrooms for active learning, continuous assessment, guidance & support, age-appropriate library, science laboratories, ICT and pedagogical centers). Our school is a child-friendly learning environment that is organised in a way to treat all children in an equal and respectful manner and more importantly striving and working for students’ all-round development.

Headquartered in the UK (London), the Foundation has an operational head office in Kenya (Nairobi) with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali).

Position Summary

The English Teacher is a key position within the Primary School and will be responsible for the students’ proficiency in English. The ideal candidate will play a role in achieving high standards of excellence and is expected to discharge their duties with utmost professionalism to meet the schools’ objective of providing quality education to students. We are interested in hiring a competent and dedicated English teacher who is passionate about our work and finds fulfillment in making a real impact.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely preparation and application of the annual plan, weekly and daily lesson plans as required by the school policy.
  • Follows the school calendar and assign reasonable tasks and homework to students.
  • Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies while engaging with students, students’ records, and colleagues.
  • Interact professionally with students, parents, staff, and school leaders.
  • Act in a confidential, ethical, and legal manner and is a role model.
  • Motivate students and inspire continuous learning.
  • Strive and extend the fullest effort for students’ better learning outcomes and the schools learning excellence.
  • Supervise students at recess, lunch, study time, and in other assigned areas.
  • Prepare materials to reinforce the regular classroom lessons under the teacher’s direction.
  • Strive to develop respect among students, parents, staff, and school leaders.
  • Listens and respect various points of view or diverse cultural and social environments
  • Shows courtesy and integrity, at the place of work.
  • Demonstrate an effort to cope with dynamic knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
  • Maintain home school communication by using different mechanisms (telephone, meeting, and sending comments via communication book)
  • Maintain confidentiality of students’ records.
  • Engage actively in the implementation of school co-curricular and social support activities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the community and parental role in the education of the child.
  • Any other duty as assigned by the School Principal.

Job Requirements

Qualification Requirements

  • BA degree with a major in English from a recognized university.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant teaching experience.
  • Practical teaching experience in private schools is preferable.
  • Substantial understanding, knowledge, and applied experience in active learning instructional classroom and placing equal opportunities of learning based on learner’s level of understanding. 
  • Understanding and experience of digital technology-supported teaching approaches. 
  • Experience in the instructional classroom, co-curricular activities, and community development tasks.
  • Excellent computer knowledge of MS-Word, MS-excel, PowerPoint, etc.
