About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee and 5871 Kebele Red Cross committees.
Key performance Areas
- Participates and assists in formulating the Volunteers, membership and branch strategy, policies and procedures of the Society;
- Participates and assists in setting tactical and operational plans, consolidates, processes and organizes performance data, and drafts regular and special reports of the work unit;
- Provides advisory and technical support to work units of the National Secretariat and branches on matters of volunteers and membership related issue documentation;
- Regularly monitors to identify the resource and skill gaps of branches in carrying out volunteers and membership activities effectively and efficiently and recommends courses of action; Develop Volunteers, members and Branches complaint &feedback mechanism;
- Enforce branches and facilitate strategic alliance with membership based institutions (such as teachers associations, nurses association, midwifery associations, confederation of trade unions, chamber of commerce), schools and higher education institutions (universities) to recruit new members and volunteers; Identify, demarcate and recruit corporate members which have nation-wide existence;
- Facilitates and supports elections at all levels of ERCS as per the Charter and organize general assembly meetings at regional level;
- Ensure the development of software and central database system for members and volunteers and manages the same;
- Guide and uphold a well-defined and unified Volunteer, membership and branch Management System within the Ethiopian Red Cross Society;
- Build capacity of volunteer leaders, supervisors and Trainers of Trainers volunteers in appropriate skills with collaboration of concerned unit; Identify and develop projects that will help to strengthen branches’ activities that promote volunteering;
- Ensure that volunteer and membership management is part of all program and project implementation; work in close cooperation with all ERCS staff and volunteers at all levels;
- Gives technical support to branches on , volunteer recruitment and management, expansion of Red Cross youth movement;
- Continuously assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of the Society’s nationwide volunteers and youth movement and membership programs and look for ways of improving the programs so as to bring about positive changes;
- Develops strategies to mobilize youth, adult, professional, business community and institutional volunteers; Makes sure that training programs and experience sharing forums are properly organized and conducted;
- Builds up the Society’s capacity in terms of volunteers and membership supporting the Society’s cause with collaboration of concerned work unit ; Organizes and provided training of trainers for youth and general volunteers and ensures effective implementation of the same up to the grass root level;
- determines the services to be performed by volunteers and members and defines duties for each assignment; evaluates the effectiveness of existing voluntary services;
- Works closely with the program/projects executing work units, assigns volunteers to different programs and projects of the Society and relationships with program/projects staff are smooth;
- Ensure Volunteers and members informed through bi-annual ‘catchment meetings’ at the Red cross Kebeles structures about the performance of the NS and the contribution it makes;
- Plan for, Coordinate and lead the implementation of volunteers and member recruitment campaigns; Assists branches’ endeavor to form and strengthen Red Cross youth associations; Monitors effective implementation of the Society’s volunteer and members Policy and Management Guideline;
- Ensure membership and volunteer online registration system to apply in all branches of the society; Consolidate and evaluate volunteers, members and branch affairs reports of branches and share, with recommendations, to all concerned;
- Ensure maintain of members and volunteers by keeping and updating their data base and regularly contacting them at all branches; Assesses the overall resource requirements and requests of branches and provides logistical, financial, technical expertise and overall support to branches of the Society;
- Develop guidelines for the National youth training Program on culture of non-violence and promotion of peace; Identifies the capacity gap of branches and based on studies and objective findings, takes action in consultation with regional branch management to bridge the gap;
- Design National ERCS’s Youth Peace Corps Program, Clubs Social Service Program & Children Peace Program; Develop guidelines and training materials to promote culture of non-violence and peace;
- ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Job Requirements
Qualification Requirements:
- Second or First degree in Pedagogical Science, Social Work, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Social Psychology, Applied Psychology, Public Administration, Business Administration, Regional and Local Development Studies, development studies or Management
- 6/8 years relevant work experience
