Background:

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an International Catholic Organization and the work of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). JRS was founded on 14th November 1980 in Rome, Italy. Over the years, the work of JRS has expanded globally to incorporate the ever-changing needs of refugees, internally displaced persons, migrants and other forcibly displaced persons. The JRS-Ethiopia was established in 1982 to assist thousands of displaced people driven from their homes by political unrest and natural disasters. Currently JRS Ethiopia operates in Addis Ababa, Dollo Ado area in Somali region and Mai-Aini and Adi-Harush refugee camps in Tigray.

JRS Ethiopia wants to hire qualified and competent Emergency and Psychosocial Coordinator based in its Refugee Community Centre Project Office in Addis Ababa. The position holder will be responsible for coordinating all emergency and psychosocial activities of Refugee Community Center (RCC) project under supervision of the Project Director. He/she will report to RCC project director. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and effectively implement emergency and psychosocial projects and services of JRS RCC project office
  • Take the lead and be responsible for overall planning and on time implementation of emergency and psychosocial activities of JRS RCC project
  • Prepare periodical ( monthly, quarterly, bi-annual and annual) reports and submit to project director, JRS Ethiopia country office, government agencies and donors 
  • Recommend, facilitate and lead the provision of financial, food and non-food items to refugees, IDPs and other groups.
  • Involve in procurement of food and non-food items provided to vulnerable refugees and host communities
  • Keep good records of the needy people assisted and of all emergency and psychosocial works
  • Manage the database of JRS RCC emergency interventions
  • Maintain good working relationship with the refugees communities, the government partners, other serviced providers and stakeholders
  • Supervise refugee incentive workers, social workers, volunteers, translators assigned to assist the emergency and psychosocial works
  • Provide capacity building trainings on psychological first aids and mental health topics for refugee leaders, incentive workers and refugee outreach volunteers and others
  • Assist project staff to mainstream MHPSS into their activities and other JRS projects Undertake sscreening of refugees and others coming for emergency assistance and provide appointment
  • Conduct interviews and home visits of the clients and counseling as appropriate
  • Provide individual and group counselling services with various
  • Evaluate client’s psychological or mental conditions based on review of client’s information.
  • Follow up status of clients after counselling sessions regarding their future life.
  • Refer clients with various problems to relevant partner service providers, NGOs and government agencies and other stakeholders and follow-up the cases 
  • Prepare communication materials on mental health and SGBV topics
  • Conduct needs assessments to revise existing and/or design new emergency and psychosocial interventions
  • Conduct situation assessment, develop concept notes and share to JRS RCC project and JRS Country Office
  • Conduct assessments on psychological wellbeing of urban refugees and impacts of JRS services on target groups
  • Design and facilitate life skills and other trainings that improve emotional and psychosocial wellbeing of refugees and vulnerable host community members
  • Conduct awareness raising activities, events and campaigns on mental health and protection risks of urban refugees and other vulnerable groups 
  • Represent JRS RCC as required in relevant meeting, network, coordination, advocacy activities
  • Participate in JRS coordinators monthly meeting and periodical project performance review and evaluation exercise
  • Prepare periodical situational update reports, testimonial success stories, and articles 
  • Ensure JRS’s and international minimum standards on MHPSS and emergency interventions are uphold 

Required No. of Staff: 1 (one)

Starting date: Immediately

Term of Employment: One year contract and possibility of extension based on availability of funding and performance

Job Requirements

Additional Requirements

  • Proven experience in leading and coordinating emergency and MHPSS interventions for refugees and IDPs in Ethiopia
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing psycho-social training programs and psychosocial first aid service delivery mechanisms
  • Working and updated knowledge of emergency programming for refugees and IDPs and MHPSS including Psychological First Aid (PFA); knowledge of prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PESA) 
  • Experience with service delivery to multicultural and diverse groups
  • Experience in developing assessment tools (e.g. questionnaires, focus group discussions);
  • Knowledge of project cycle management and sphere standards
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent skills in English required 
  • Ability to write clear and well-argued reports
  • Critical thinking, strong analytical skills and objective judgments
  • High degree of proficiency in the use of MS Office (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Self-motivated, highly organized team player and collaborative spirit

Minimum Job Requirements, Qualification and Experience:

Education:

  • BA or MA degree in social science fields (preferably social work, psychology, sociology, development management etc), humanitarian and refugee studies, development studies and other related fields. 

Proven Professional Experience:

  • At least 5 years of proven experiences for BA degree and 3 years for MA degree applicants on emergency and psychosocial interventions targeted refugees and/or IDPs
