Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

Join our team to fulfill the needs of the huge office demand throughout the year, the Communication, Advocacy, and Partnerships section would like to hire qualified writers/editors to write/edit high-quality reports, donor briefs, regional and thematic briefs, human interest stories and other documents on an individual consultancy basis.

Key function, accountabilities, and related duties/tasks

Under the supervision of the communication specialist, the consultant will be responsible for writing, editing, fact-checking remotely or from within the country, for the above-mentioned types of documents and reports and apply the following strategies:

Deliverables

  • Write up the reports/briefs after having the initial concept/draft from the respective program officers sections
  • Liaise with relevant Sections for background documents, inputs, and fact-checking.
  • Restructure and rewrite the areas of text as needed to promote clarity, continuity, and internal consistency and incorporate reviewers’ comments;
  • Redraft incorrect or unclear passages where necessary and insert any omitted text;
  • Provide accuracy and consistency in capitalization, spelling, abbreviations/acronyms, notes, bibliography, titles, graphs, and tables (including their notes and sources), as per the UNICEF style and guidebook;
  • Ensure that citations are appropriately included for statement/passages where required;
  • Ensure that the language used is impactful; that repetitious text and jargon are eliminated, and that potential sensitivity are flagged and ways of resolving the issue(s) proposed;
  • Develop and ensure consistency in overall layout;
  • Work closely with responsible officers on revisions and changes.

Timelines

  • The consultant will deliver within agreed timelines pending the assignment.
  • Payment for writing and editing assignments will be paid per day of work, based on a prior discussion of time spent per assignment.

Reporting

  • The writer will work under the direct supervision of the Communication Specialist and in close collaboration with the program staff.
  • Feedback on writing/editing assignments will be provided by CAP during the finalization process.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree in journalism, communications, language, other social sciences, or related discipline
  • A minimum of 3 [Three] years of relevant professional experience in journalism, writing, communication, public relations, or other related field using excellent analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Experience with writing feature/ human interest stories is highly desirable.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergencies is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
  • Previous experience reporting and writing on UN programs would be an advantage

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • Excellent oral and written communication, report, and proposal writing skills in English. Writing samples may be requested
  • Good ability to support the translation of analytical findings and evidence into a cohesive narrative
  • Knowledge of UNICEF programs in Ethiopia is highly desirable
  • Good knowledge of the application of the equity lens and human rights perspective to programming
  • Professional and native English writing and exiting skills. Knowledge of Ethiopian languages would be an advantage
  • Photographic experience would be an important advantage
  • Tact and political sensitivity, flexibility, teamwork, and partnership building, commitment, drive for results, embracing diversity, integrity, self-awareness, self-regulation, and technical knowledge
  • Excellent communication (writing and oral), negotiation, and other human relations skills.
  • Excellent ability to collect, treat and analyze data. Advanced computer literacy expected in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
