Summary:

  • The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Telephone Operator.

The work schedule for this position is:

  • Full Time (44 hours per week)

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Duties

The incumbent is one of the US Embassy's two switchboard operators. The incumbent receives, re-directs, and manages all incoming phone calls, as well as placing local, national, and international phone calls as needed by embassy employees. S/he updates and maintains switchboard calling information, as well as monitors telephone line status. The job holder is in charge of a Nortel 11 C Switchboard Console, serves as administrator to the Safe and Accountability for Everyone (SAFE) notification system. The incumbent reports directly to the Switchboard Supervisor.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Two years of clerical/administrative/government service office work involving contact with the public is required.

LANGUAGE: 

  • Level 3 (Good Working Knowledge) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English language is required. (This may be tested)
  • Level 4 (fluent) Speaking/reading/writing of Amharic language is required. (This may be tested)

Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop and maintain relationships and have a pleasant demeanor and ability to work well with the public. Incumbent often works independently and must demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and good time-management skills. Often works with sensitive information and must have high standards of integrity, the ability to work under pressure, and display excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to operate facsimile and copy machines. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access) and SharePoint website at a contributor level is required. (These may be tested).

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
