Role Purpose

The post holder is responsible for managing, coordinating and implementing Christian Aid’s response to emergency response, especially floods, drought and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia particularly in the northern regions, focusing on the implementation of an innovative and effective programme that result in significant impact on the lives of people affected by the crisis. To co-ordinate Christian Aid’s programme being implemented by partners in the northern region. To assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of Christian Aid’s humanitarian response, providing effective and timely support to partner organisations, enabling them to implement a rapid, effective and principled response to emergencies. To coordinate with the Christian Aid Ethiopia team to ensure a continuum between emergency and development work and to provide support to partners including on monitoring and evaluation. To be responsible for day-to-day management of the emergency programme, grant management, liaison with Government, UN and other NGOS working in the area including project reporting, monitoring, advocacy and policy work and representing Christian Aid at clusters and meetings. To help ensure that project resources and planned project activities are undertaken within budget and time frame which enable impact and direct benefit to target communities. To coordinate the overall human, material and financial resources of the coordination office. To work in collaboration with the country /thematic programme management team to support delivery of projects to the highest standards and in line with the country strategy. To act proactively to engage in any activities that strengthen the coordination office and country program and takes up additional assignments given from the organization.

Job Requirements

Applied skills/knowledge and expertise

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant technical discipline, particularly in Social Science, Disaster Risk Management, DRR and EW, Development Studies or related fields with at least 5 years’ of experience working with an international NGO or with an institutional donor
  • Knowledge and experience of emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery program issues.
  • Knowledge of global development issues, including policy and advocacy topics and familiarity with emergency problems relevant to country or the northern region.
  • Knowledge of the political, social and economic context of the area and the development issues and challenges it faces.
  • Knowledge of capacity building tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Sphere and Red Cross Code of Conduct, awareness of CHS.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, gender and the livelihoods approaches in relief and recovery.
  • Professional experience in living and working in a disaster affected areas.
  • An adaptable attitude, decisiveness, and the capacity to make sound decisions with incomplete information.
  • Relevant experience of emergency project/programme management working with and through local partners.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with ability to work as a team member and the ability to effectively represent Christian Aid at local level.
  • Knowledge in monitoring, evaluation and research approaches for humanitarian work.
  • Ability to work independently, self-directed, to meet deadlines and ability of working under pressure and with multiple priorities.
