Job Purpose Summary:

The purpose of the position is to oversee site-based implementation of CMAM program activities, Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergency (IYCF-E) practices and ensure perfect linkages and integration of all CMAM components, IYCF-E, outreach sectors and Livelihood backyard gardening activities.

The Senior Nutrition officer is responsible for planning; coordinating, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of their respective Nutrition site activities and ensure its effective implementation through regular capacity building and technical support, identification of resource needed and its proper allocation. He/she ensures the smooth coordination of all CMAM and IYCF-E sectors program data collection, following the agreed UNHCR-ARRA standard operation procedures for refugees in Ethiopia Gambella region, and report as per recommended deadlines.

This position reports to the Nutrition Program Manager, and will works closely with other respective site Senior Nutrition officer, CMAM officers, IYCF Officers/counsellors, Livelihood officers, Store Keeper and Measurer/Registrar under the field office.

ESSENTIAL Job Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Prepare detail weekly and monthly nutrition site Plan and ensure its implementation as per SPHERE & UNHCR performance standard with the agreed time -frame.
  • Identify the site based nutrition program demands and request the required equipment, materials, drugs and medical supplies and ensure its delivery.
  • Manage the technical aspects of CMAM program, staff and budget.
  • Assess training needs of the CMAM team and conduct/ request for training as appropriate
  • Ensure good coordination with respective site Outreach supervisors, IYCF nurses, CMAM officer SC/OTP/TSFP Nurses and other nutrition staff and provide regular feedback.
  • Conduct appraisals of each supervisor’s work performance annual basis and as needed.
  • In collaboration with outreach supervisor and COAs, organize center based nutrition surveillance activities, such as active MUAC screening and exhaustive WFH screening among targeted vulnerable groups in the refugee’s camp, including children below 5 years, pregnant and lactating women and medical social cases as per established criteria. 
  • Facilitate linkages with the health partner in the camp and ensure that all medical referral cases are done in timely manner and documented as per CMAM framework approach.
  • Assist in nutrition surveys, which includes logistics, cluster sampling, organization of the teams, survey methodology,
  • With the supervisors, arrange the distribution and transport schedules and submit them to the relevant departments one week in advance.
  • Ensure that the OTP, TSFP, BSFP and SC teams have all food and equipment that they require for each distribution.
  • Ensure sub stores are correctly maintained for the safe storage of food and report.
  • Ensure the accurate records of the stock are taken these include the type, source and location of food related to the program.
  • Organize weekly and monthly staff meeting at site level and report all the program progress, gaps, challenges and action points taken to the hierarchy.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the program and report monthly on all nutrition activities. 
  • Monitor all nutrition staff adhering to the recommended nutrition guidelines, agreed UNHCR/ARRA nutrition Guidance note and standard operation procedures (SOP) for refugee’s response in Ethiopia and Gambella region.
  • Collaborate with other program sectors in sharing information and ideas ensuring that the implementation of the nutrition program complements other emergency and development activities within the program.
  • Provide technical support and training where required to all team members.
  • Generate ideas to strengthen the development of the nutrition unit.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports in collaboration with other CNC sites Seniors and Submit each report as per agreed schedule.
  • Report directly to the NPM ensuring that all problems are conveyed in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in nutrition, public health nursing and/ related training.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • At least 2-5 years’ experience of managing a CMAM program or working in a supervisory role related to CMAM & IYCF activities
  • Good understanding of SMART methodology for Nutrition surveys
  • Experience with training of staff in CMAM and IYCF
  • Ability to read and interpret nutrition reports
  • Flexible with ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
  • Experience in leading nutritional surveys using SMART methodology
  • Good communication skills; Oral and written with fluency in written and spoken English 
  • Experience in Gambella area is a plus.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to cope with stress; hardship; patience and flexibility.
  • Ability to effectively work with government, community leaders, international/national organizations, donors, partners and other International Medical Corps relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English. Advanced proficiency in the use of MS Office, Email and other computer applications
  • Able to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with colleagues in course of work.
  • Willingness to work additional hours in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and familiarity with nutrition surveys (Coverage, standard and KAP surveys).
  • Strong organizational skills, ability and willingness to travel and work
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in ensuring community participation and gender issues in humanitarian programming
  • Prepare detailed implementation plan and share with all woreda base staffs
  • Follow up of project implementation through organizing regular update
  • Represent IMC in any meeting organized at project site.
