About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially the most vulnerable to malnutrition.

In this context, the EatSafe Evidence and Action Towards Safe Nutritious Food program at GAIN will lead a consortium to generate evidence and knowledge of the potential of increased consumer demand for safe food to substantially improve the safety of nutritious foods in informal market settings in low- and middle-income countries

Specific  Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the overall planning, coordination, direction and management of the project to ensure adherence to programmatic quality in implementation, and the USAID compliance and contractual requirements
  • Responsible for budget related approvals for EatSafe including staffing, travel, contracts, consulting agreements, and procurements. Ensures EatSafe complies with USAID programmatic rules and regulations including the need for annual financial audits.
  • Responsible for high quality delivery in time and budget, working closely with research and country teams
  • Responsibility for timely and quality reporting to donors in collaboration with GAIN’s Development Office
  • Working closely with the Senior Manager, ensures technical quality of the program both for EatSafe and Food Safety at GAIN.
  • Liaises with USAID and other donors, government, international and regional organizations, and other high-level stakeholders to ensure alignment in food safety research and actions
  • Leads in the coordination of activities with consortium members and other USAID food safety investment platforms/ projects
  • Manage direct reports as per GAIN policies and provide mentorship to them in support of continual capacity development
  • Provide support to the projects Knowledge Mobilization team to develop and implement a strategic approach to the storage of data and knowledge products, their dissemination through multiple media, and to mobilization the evidence and knowledge generated for policy making and program development
  • Write and disseminate materials relevant for EatSafe directed to policy audiences and in support of further strategic planning and resource mobilization activities
  • Development new business for EatSafe through direct and continual engagement with USAID missions
  • Represent the consortium at nutrition, food systems and related events
  • Contribute to GAIN influencing objectives through participation in committees, boards, advisory groups relevant to food safety as appropriate
  • Develop a strategic approach for GAIN’s work in food safety, including but not limited to EatSafe

Job Requirements

Education

  • Advanced degree in a field relevant to development, food systems, food safety, business, or related field an asset
  • Formal project management and/or leadership training required

Experience

  • Extensive leadership experience in international project development and management
  • Demonstrable experience managing projects funded by USAID
  • Extensive experience working in developing country contexts

Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-cultural environment, under pressure, and to meet deadlines
  • Excellent project management, fundraising, team building and leadership skills
  • Deep knowledge of food systems, food value chains, food business and informal market setting
  • Knowledge of food safety issues and actions strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated people management and mentoring skills
