UNICEF Ethiopia’s Social Policy section focuses on social inclusion, and one specific area of work is on disability-inclusive programming. Estimates for the number of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia range from 7.8 million (9.3 percent of the population) to 15 million (17.6 percent) with an estimated 55 percent being children. Persons with disabilities in Ethiopia are amongst the poorest and most marginalized groups. In urban areas, the extreme poverty rate for persons with disabilities is 41 percent higher than people without disabilities, with children having the highest rate of extreme poverty. Multi-dimensional child poverty for children with disabilities impacts every aspect of a household, including their access to and affordability of basic services (health, nutrition, education, WASH, and protection), and the situation for children with disabilities in Ethiopia is exacerbated by recurring climate change-induced disasters, public health emergencies, and conflict.
The intern is expected to work closely with the Social Policy team and other UNICEF program sections to support the identification and development of partnerships with disabled person organizations (DPOs), support the data and knowledge management needs related to disability-inclusive programming, and support the overall disability mainstreaming within UNICEF programming.
