UNICEF Ethiopia’s Social Policy section focuses on social inclusion, and one specific area of work is on disability-inclusive programming. Estimates for the number of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia range from 7.8 million (9.3 percent of the population) to 15 million (17.6 percent) with an estimated 55 percent being children. Persons with disabilities in Ethiopia are amongst the poorest and most marginalized groups. In urban areas, the extreme poverty rate for persons with disabilities is 41 percent higher than people without disabilities, with children having the highest rate of extreme poverty. Multi-dimensional child poverty for children with disabilities impacts every aspect of a household, including their access to and affordability of basic services (health, nutrition, education, WASH, and protection), and the situation for children with disabilities in Ethiopia is exacerbated by recurring climate change-induced disasters, public health emergencies, and conflict.

The intern is expected to work closely with the Social Policy team and other UNICEF program sections to support the identification and development of partnerships with disabled person organizations (DPOs), support the data and knowledge management needs related to disability-inclusive programming, and support the overall disability mainstreaming within UNICEF programming.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief of Social Policy, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

• Provide administrative and technical inputs for disability inclusion meetings with multiple stakeholders, as well provide backstopping support.
• Undertake disability research, analysis of the findings, and prepare briefing notes and reports on assigned disability-related subject areas of interest to UNICEF, Donors & Partners as identified.
• Assist in documenting and cataloging disability-related information, as well as collating information on disability collected from multiple stakeholders.
• Assist in the organization of events (training events, workshops, seminars, conferences, missions, etc.) and draft/edit reports of the same as may be required.
• Undertake day-to-day administrative tasks as required.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• Enrolment at a university in Ethiopia at the undergraduate or graduate level or being a recent graduate (within the past two years) in social sciences is required
• Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required
• Good interpersonal, networking, and communication skills
• Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team
• Flexible and open to learning and new experiences
• Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures and working environments
• Fluency in English is required
