ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This job will be located in either WFP Pugnido field -office. The Emergency nurse reports technically to the Chief Medical Officer and Administratively to EMAT project manager for the routine administrative issues.

JOB PURPOSE

The emergency nurse/paramedic will provide emergency care (Basic Life  Support and Advanced Cardiac Life  Support) to WFP personnel and staff of other UN agencies or international Non-Governmental Organizations as the case may be in the allocated duty station and their eligible dependents.

He/she will assist in providing primary health care services.

He/or she will be responsible for preparing patients for referrals to hospitals or during medical evacuation to Addis Ababa and accompanying them where applicable.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Position involves serving as a Paramedic/Emergency nurse for the Ethiopia Medical Assistance Team to provide:

• Respond to emergency and non-emergency services and attend to call duties calmly, efficiently, and promptly.
• Provide basic and advanced Cardiac Life support services of pre-hospital, inter-hospital, and emergency service care using equipment meant for basic life support functions, cardiac monitoring, cardiac defibrillation, administration of anti-arrhythmic agents, securing intravenous lines for the administration of parenteral therapy, administration of specific medications, and solutions as prescribed by the physician;
• He/or she must be able to use ventilation devices, provide trauma care including immobilization of fractures, stop bleeding and other techniques in line with American Heart Association BLSD, ACLS and PHTLS/ATLS guidelines or any other guidelines from a recognized resuscitation association.
• Accompanying patients that are referred to local hospitals or medically evacuated in coordination with the Chief Medical Officer or other physician working in the clinic and management, while maintaining patients’ confidentiality.
• Support in delivering primary health care including dispensing prescribed medicines and performing minor procedures and in absence of the doctor, liaise with the local hospital to ensure appropriate care is given to the patient or communicate with the available doctor by telephone for guidance.
• Conduct training for other healthcare providers including doctors and other nurses in different Duty Station on emergency care (BLS and ACLS).
• Properly document patient’s history, procedures carried out and medications are given and regular state in accordance with EMAT/WFP policies and procedures including entering data in the available electronic record.
• Protect the privacy and confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with WFP privacy policies, procedures, and practices, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider.
• Regularly verify the equipment, medications in the ambulance to ensure they are functioning and not expired, including making requests to replenish used items or near expiry ones.
• Participate in wellness campaigns like screening for CVDs and vaccinations and other wellness activities
• prepare and submit required reports on time and attend relevant meetings and other EMAT/WFP activities.
• Observe prescribed health and safety precautions in the performance of all tasks
• Stock management and maintain all pharmaceutical and medical equipment in the clinic in good work condition at all time
• Run the clinic in absence of the doctor with coordination with the head doctor and project manager submitting weekly and monthly reports.
• Perform any other assignments as required.

Additional Duties:

• May be required to scan or perform other office duties.
• Perform other related work as directed by EMAT Project Manager and Head Doctor.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

• The incumbent must be a holder of a bachelor’s degree or 3 years training diploma in nursing and certificate in emergency care from accredited schools.
• Must have certifications in BLS, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, and preferably prehospital trauma life support (PHTLS) or advanced trauma life support (ATLS).

Experience: A minimum of five years in emergency medicine, remote medicine, flight medicine, ICU, or critical care. Experience either working in a hardship location under very difficult and insecure environments is an asset.

Language:  Fluency in both oral and written communication in English. Knowledge of other local languages is an added advantage.
