Position Summary: Responsible for the overall management and direction of the laboratory.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specimen Collection, Handling, and Processing:
- Oversee proper collection and submission of clinical specimens;
- Troubleshoots problems related to specimens and test orders and maintains documentation of such problems and corrective action taken;
Test Performance:
- To act as a backup for the Laboratory Manager when required;
- To ensure that the Departmental Quality Management Plan is being followed;
- Supervise staff and distribute workload to ensure it is completed in a timely manner;
- Ensure that quality control testing and verification is completed within the section and signed off;
- Ensure that preventative maintenance of equipment is performed and documented. Initiates repairs on malfunctioning equipment;
- Monitor efficiency of the department and recommend quality improvement changes as appropriate;
- Trouble shoots problems occurring during test performance and documents problems, corrective actions, and resolutions;
- Notifies Laboratory Manager of problems occurring during the test performance that would affect patient test results;
- To represent the department at Labor Management meetings;
- To perform staff performance appraisal’s and review competency testing;
- Collaborates with quality officer to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures;
Test Result Reporting:
- Manages laboratory generated information to enable effective, timely, and accurate reporting of patient data;
- Ensure all critical results have been called and documented by workstations;
- Verifies patient reports produced within laboratory;
Instrument Related Responsibility:
- Calibrates and perform method validation studies as needed;
- Troubleshot instrument related problem as necessary and maintains proper documentation of problems, corrective action, and resolution;
- Ensures proper functioning of instruments before release of patient results;
- Notifies Laboratory Manager of instrument malfunction;

- Ensure Actions to improve the effectiveness of the QMS are identified;
- Ensure Action plan responsibilities are delegated;
- Ensure Timelines for completion of action plans are defined;
- Ensure Progress of action plans is monitored;
- Ensure Policy statement and goals are revised as appropriate;
- Ensure Summary report of outcomes is prepared;
- Ensure Outcomes with appropriate personnel are communicated;
- Ensures compliance with management and operational policy, process and procedure documents and records;
- Ensures compliance with retention times for documents and records;
- Ensure there is a program established for the management of equipment, reagents and supplies;
- Ensure that written standard operating procedures (SOP) for all steps in the path of workflow are available to appropriate staff;
- Notifies staff for new or changed documents and records;
- Ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place to provide health care providers with accurate and timely information to manage patient care;
- Ensures a suitable system to prevent damage, deterioration, loss or unauthorized access;
- Ensure proper utilization of resources for proper communication;
- Ensures that all non-conforming events are investigated, documented, corrected and reported;
- Assesses all patient safety reports and reports to Lab manger;
- Prepares statistical or summary reports and forwards to appropriate groups for review and improvement;
- Implements and monitors improvements to processes and procedures;
- Ensures quality indicators are monitored, documented, reported and actions taken as required;
- Ensure that management audits are regularly conducted;
- Reviews and follows up on action plans related to QMS audits;
- Ensures implementation of and compliance with policies and supporting documents;
- Reviews the Quality Management System implementation on a regular basis;
- Ensures the Implementation of and compliance with the twelve quality system essentials (QSE);
- Facilitates systematic improvement through the sequential exercising of the five quality components (QP, QT, QM, QI, QR);
- Develops, together with all other the laboratory staffs, and distributes laboratory handbook to referring clinicians to explain the overall laboratory services offered and the functionality of the laboratory;
- Communicate and provide timely notification to customers on delays in service;
- Establishes excellent relationships with both internal and external clients;
- Ensures processes to measure client satisfaction levels related to laboratory service are implemented;
- Identifies opportunities for process improvement;
- Address, document and manage any complaints, request, and/or suggestions from staff and users of laboratory services;
- Ensures client satisfaction surveys are conducted on a regular basis;
- Ensure good staff morale;
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Renewed professional license with a minimum of 5 (five) years experience in supervisory role
