Summary

The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Political Assistant.

The work schedule for this position is:

  • Full Time (40 hours per week)

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Supervisory Position: YES

Relocation Expenses Reimbursed: NO

Travel Required: Occasional Travel, Travel is required approximately 25% of the time.

Duties

The Political Assistant for Human Rights prepares factual and analytical reports on political developments, including research and analysis of legal and governmental issues, as well as allegations of human rights violations. Prepares materials for meetings and briefings. Organizes and supports travel within Ethiopia for the Political and Economic Section. As needed, translates materials and interprets for P/E officers. Assists P/E officers as needed and backs up the Senior Political Specialist and the Political Assistant for Labor.

Qualifications and Evaluations

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in political research and analysis, using advanced written English on a daily basis for professional purposes is required.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in political science, law, human rights, history, international development/international affairs, or journalism/media studies is required.

LANGUAGE: Level 4 (fluency) in reading/speaking/writing English and Amharic is required. Position requires near-native speaker professional-level fluency in English (at least 4 plus level) for translations of complexly phrased and idiomatic English documents into appropriately chosen equivalent Amharic phrases and vice versa. Applicant must possess professional-level drafting skills. (This may be tested)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, and analytical skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); typing
  • Able to prepare timely, detailed, factual reports in precise and accurate form
