 Role Purpose

To manage regional online platforms, including the new Teaching English Africa website and its communities, and support online teacher development across the region to achieve reach and impact targets for the English Connects program and demonstrate British Council leadership in education technology in English language teaching.

Main opportunities and challenges for this role:

The goal of English for Education Systems (EES) is high-quality education systems for the teaching, learning, and assessment of English. We support overseas governments and nongovernmental actors seeking to improve the quality of English in their countries and contexts.

  • The appointed candidate will build the new English Connects program as a platform for innovations in online teacher development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • And will establish the new Teaching English Africa website - a flagship regional EES website - and its communities as a hub for English language teachers and teacher educators in SSA, and develop its reach and depth of engagement with its audiences and its reputation for quality and excellence. 

Main accountabilities but not limited to the following:

  • The post-holder will lead on the maintenance and development of the Teaching English Africa website in collaboration with the global and regional English Connects teams and digital team to ensure the smooth running of the site and the user experience.
  • Develop and implement content strategies for the website in conjunction with the wider English Connects and EES teams.
  • Identify and meet the requirements of target audiences through the development of new online components of the offer using a range of digital solutions Advise and guide EES colleagues in the region on online teacher development solutions for EES programs.
  • Actively build professional networks and information channels within ELT and EES in the region and beyond to maintain an excellent understanding of relevant developments to support the creation of high-quality online teacher development.
  • Develop innovations in online teacher development to meet the future needs of EES in the region.
  • Develop social communities and learning networks for teachers of English to increase brand loyalty and advocacy, create long-term engagement and retention, and connect them to the UK through the world’s largest online English teacher community.
  • Build effective working relationships in the region to facilitate innovation in online teacher development in EES and the achievement of objectives and targets for the Teaching English Africa website.
  • Plan and prioritize own work activities and when required, those of a wider project team (outside the direct management line), to ensure effective delivery of diverse responsibilities and project deliverables.
  • May be formal line manager to a web coordinator and other staff supporting the running of the website.

As with any business that experiences peaks and troughs of activity, there is likely to be a need to work outside office hours from time to time.

Essential Requirements–

The successful candidate will need to possess the following requirements:

  • English teaching qualification.
  • Successful track record in developing and managing online teacher training 

Desirable requirements 

  • TEFL-Q - a diploma-level qualification in teaching English as a foreign/second language that meets accreditation UK requirements.
  • Masters in ELT, education, or digital education
  • Marketing qualification
  • Project Management qualification
  • Digital Product Development Qualification
  • Experience in overseeing digital communities or learning networks
  • Experience in running a website and developing resources for a website
  • Experience in online marketing
  • Understanding of ELT in education policy, current trends, and research internationally – particularly digital
